Spanish is definitely necessary in some parts of the world, especially the US. I live in the north and even here alot of jobs require you to know at least passable spanish.
History is necessary to keep people from being stupid. You probably won't use it regularly, but that's like saying that because you don't use complex math you don't need to know any math.
