Being the TOTAL NERD I am, that's actually historically inaccurate. Thumbs up was the motion to kill the defeated gladiator, and thumbs down was the motion to spare his life.
Being the TOTAL NERD I am, that's actually historically inaccurate. Thumbs up was the motion to kill the defeated gladiator, and thumbs down was the motion to spare his life.
The thumbs up was to tell the other gladiator "He's yours," and down was saying "His life is too valuable to be taken by you." Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no. The concept still applies.

The thumb represented a sword, so thumbs-up implied a drawn sword (kill 'em) whereas a fist represented a sheathed sword (spare 'em).

It was based on a painting (done ages after the Roman empire fell, of course,) which showed them merely pointing the thumb outwards.

Thumbs up meant die, thumbs down meant they lived.
Shove your thumbs.

What did the old Roman emperors TRULY do with their thumbs?

I'm sorry your small brain can't comprehend how fucking awesome and revolutionary Rome was.

As in "Cut his throat".
[release]"Only the Good Die Twice" is a spy story set within the fictional James Bond universe. Through the prologue, it is revealed that the name "James Bond" is the codename for agents with 007 status and that the original James Bond from the Cold War (played by Sean Connery in a returning role) has gone rogue and is now the head of SPECTRE. The current Bond is tasked by MI6 to stop him before he can initiate a global thermonuclear war.[/release]
So basically Metal Gear
