ME1's combat wasn't terrible. It was alright.
But ME1 had a better storyline, and honestly was a bit more engaging than ME2. ME2 felt way too large, and also the fucking planet scanning.

I don't know if it's considered canon. But the prop was actually just a Ruger-mini 14 with a fuckton of padding and casing around it. So in reality it was just firing 7.62. Also you have to remember the movie is a satire of the military and fascism, so everything is deliberately bumbling, and ineffective as fuck.
They do several things wrong during the invasion. Covering the part about the ship formation around the planet. It's fucking space, you have all the space you need. There is no advantage to positioning ships so close together. If I'm right, the planning had the invasion go in waves. They should of had the ships related to Wave 1 orbit the planet, MUCH FATHER APART, while the ships in queue orbit much father away. Have wave 1 ships unload their cargo or soldiers into the giant meat grinder that is Klendathu. They start to pull out while the ships related to wave 2 move in. When you have so many large ships and objects so close together you get congestion, and at worse ship collision.
Second, this relates to the blue plasma that the bugs secret out of their thorax anuses. WHO THE FUCK IS IN CHARGE OF DOUBLE CHECKING. OH THAT SHIT THAT IS HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE AND EXTREMELY HOT, PROBABLY NOT A THREAT.
Third, there is absolutely no use of combined arms. I understand it's called the mobile "infantry" but when you only have infantry with no other forms of support you're heading into trouble. It could be aruged the rocky and uneven terrain of the planet inhibits the use of vehicles and armor, but the sky is completely open. Why not carpet bomb the fuck out of the planet first, maybe even for months to make sure everything is absolutely dead. Then when the infantry does the cleaning up have precision airstrikes to support the infantry. Hell you even see small agile fighters accompanying the much larger corvettes and cruisers. Why the fuck are they there, they only take up space and the bugs don't have any fighter jet like species to meet them.
Forth, the actual plan of the infantry. There seems to be no coherent or collected plan amongst the commanders. It just boils down to zerg rushing head on, and kill as many as possible. There is no coordination, or formations of any semblance of tactics besides just run at them and hope for the best. Also when the drop ships land and start unloading troops, WHY DO THEY FIRE FLARES. Last time I checked the bugs have no IR type of missiles and only serves to paint a giant target onto the MI's position.
Lastly, the Moritta rifle itself. It is a fucking mess. It's a bullpup style rifle. Bullpup is meant to reduce the length of the barrels, and allow for compactness while still containing the punch of a rifle. The Morittas are fucking massive. It's unwieldy and highly awkward to use and maneuver with. But it could be argued that the long barrel could help long range capabilities, it doesn't fucking matter. The rifle has no iron sights. I'm not fucking shitting you, look closely at the carrying handle, there is no groove, or indent or anything. It has no fucking iron sights. Aiming with it and hoping for accurate shots is impossible. The only upsides I can really think of with the Moritta is that is uses caseless bullets (they never explain how it works, just live with it), the bullets are apparently some sort of high grade composite of metals, and has a 160 round clip. But besides that it's as ineffective and brain-dead as the rest of the MI in this movie.
