The thing I don't get about this sort of thing is, how is this any scarier than the world being destroyed by a giant meteor impact, or a supernova, or something like that? That's one aspect of cosmic horror that I don't understand. Why do people think that the earth being destroyed by a giant sentient being is scarier than it being destroyed by a non-sentient phenomenon? The basic effect is the same from our perspective.

If a sentient being decides our demise, then it is just that: a decision. Being subjected to some catastrophe such as impact or incineration is under no-one's control and simply cannot be controlled, but something willingly deciding that our rock should perish is more grim than some unfortunate circumstances that are uncontrollable.
