Honestly if you're looking at something in that bracket, there's no reason not to go with an Intel based setup. I don't mean that from a fanboy perspective...but you could easily afford a solid LGA1155 setup with either a Sandy or Ivy CPU (if you choose to wait until April for Ivy). Both of those architectures easily beat whatever AMD has on the table right now. Especially if you're not using heavily threaded applications. And even then, something like the 2500K can hold its own in a majority of AV editing scenarios / rendering tasks. Not to mention it can overclock like a beast.

Don't bother trying to 'future proof' your build in that sense. Intel has better performance on a per-core basis, there's no way around it.

I'm just trying to steer you in the right direction. If you have a budget with that much flexibility, and you're going to be gaming / using Windows as your primary OS; there is no reason not to check out Intel's offerings.

the people in the H&S forum can do a nice job too. i just want to make sure he's actually going to end up with a machine that fits his potential budget. as i said, if you're going to have $1000 available to build a machine, there's no reason not to go with Intel. he doesn't even have to spend anywhere near that to wind up with a nice build though.

Clock speed means absolutely nothing when you're comparing two completely different processors. The Sandy Bridge architecture is still leagues ahead of anything AMD has out.
