Aaaaaaah It's 5-7-5, for God's sake!
English is not my main language so I have a real hard time counting syllables. Could you please count the syllables for me so I have something to compare to? [editline]17th December 2012[/editline] btw, I know it's 5-7-5 I just wrote a essay about haiku. In swedish tho.
Each beat of a word is one syl-a-ble. cow has one syl-a-ble Mo-tor has two syl-a-bles Ro-tar-y has three syl-a-bles Di-rig-ib-le has four syl-a-bles And so on! It's okay. My people communicate entirely through haiku.
I guess I'll just have to practice. I'm outta here cause I'm derailing the thread.
Wri-ting hai-ku is Har-der than I ima-gin-ed Su-per di-ffi-cult?
nah, not really though its actually easy you'll get it some day.
nah, not really though its actually easy you'll get it some day.
It's easier for me to do it in swedish since it's my main language. As a secondary language, english is a bit more tricky. But I guess you're right.
I read somewhere that most people get haikus wrong since in japan they don't count syllables as we do. [editline]Edit[/editline] Nope that was just for translations.
not really surprising since translations usually fuck up the 5-7-5 count for syllables since they have to be altered to even make sense.
This is what wikipedia said Although the word "on" is sometimes translated as "syllable", one on is counted for a short syllable, two for an elongated vowel, diphthong, or doubled consonant, and one for an "n" at the end of a syllable. Thus, the word "haibun", though counted as two syllables in English, is counted as four on in Japanese (ha-i-bu-n); and the word "on" itself, which English-speakers would view as a single syllable, comprises two on: the short vowel o and the moraic nasal n̩. This is illustrated by the Issa haiku below, which contains 17 on but only 15 syllables. Conversely, some sounds, such as "kyo" (きょ) can be perceived as two syllables in English but are a single on in Japanese Although I'm gonna stop now since I'm also starting to derail the thread. Best one I've read: A single bonsai tree Can cast a noble presence Across any common room
6-7-7??
I suspect it's translated since it's from a collection of traditional haiku, hence the wrong amount of syllables.
