Somebody explain this phenomenon where people try to look ugly as possible?

If I take a picture of myself, I usually try to get the best angle/lighting/face pose/etc possible.

If someone dislikes their picture, they can go "yeah? well it's supposed to look bad, i tried to look as ugly as possible!!"

I have a lady friend that does this all the time and frankly, it's pretty irritating. Every picture you see of her, she's making some weird fucking face.
