• To all Americans - How is America like?

i dont know about any schools over here but in terms of quality of life, northern illinois is the fucking bomb
Yes, I've heard that Northern Illinois is lovely, and the university at Urbana-Champaigne is world-class. That is one of my top picks for university, but I'm still quite undecided! In the end, my decision will boil down to whichever school can offer me the best opportunities. With my GI Bill and (hopefully) a scholarship, I should be able to swing most of my college bills without a loan. Not needing to apply for a loan is pretty important, seeing as how we're officially in bankruptcy, and all. :v: Chicago is one of the most brilliant cultural centers of America, for anybody seeking art, theater, and general creativity. The architecture, especially, is absolutely beautiful; It's a strange mashing of traditional and contemporary architectural styles that results in a very unique, very urban feel. My dad's moving out there in a few months.
America is a hugely diverse country and to attempt to generalize it to any particular way of life is quite silly. Life in the Southwest, for example, is fundamentally different from life in the Mid-West. There is no single American culture; our culture is best defined as the end-result of clashing a hundred subcultures, and subcultures of subcultures, together in an inseparable way. Life in the suburban Mid-West is fundamentally different from life in the Southwest, or the West, or the North, or the East, or the Southeast, or the Northeast. Culture within each county of each state can be vastly different from that of its neighbors. America is very, very big. No matter your cultural tastes, you can find a home in it. I, for one, found the Southwest, in rural Arizona, to be the most comfortable of all the places I've lived. The arid deserts and mountain ranges were absolutely beautiful, and looking out the window each day was simply serene. Things moved at a more relaxed pace, as if nobody felt any need to rush, and that sense of "Southern hospitality" proved true many times. There were clashes with unsavory elements every now and then, some disconnected rancher with awkward ethnocentric ideologies, but the general culture and climate proved so damn comfortable that I would be happy to move back on a more permanent basis. In fact, I'm looking to attend University out that way, once I've secured my associate's degree from my community college.
Living in Canada, in a province that borders 3 U.S States, it's pretty cool how general culture varies from state to state. For example, one x-mas my dad and I drove down into Idaho, every shop we went into was selling guns and/or gun related stuff, and the general feeling was more "rural" and outdoor adventure. In contrast when I visit Washington (as Seattle is only 1h boat ride away) it feels alot more modren and Libreal, and you can feel the roots of rock around the city.
Okay, you want a god damn real view? Stop listening to all these stereotypes people are throwing around in this thread. Some of its true, but not a lot of it. Yeah, we have a lot of fat people, but we also have a shit load of skinny people. Just like any other country. The south has a lot of red necks but only depending on where you are, because I live in Georgia (in the south) and I can be in one part of town and there will be a bunch of "nigger-hating-shoot-em-ups" or I'll be slightly west of the part of town and everyone will be proper and sound like they're not from the south. It varies. Yeah sure, there's a lot of crime, but just stay away from dark corners and bad areas and you're pretty much fine. Gas prices are high. Government is control crazy. Economy's not that great right now. But high school was one of my favorite times of my life. College is even better. The food is great here. New York is also a fantastic place. Full of excitement, so I highly recommend New York if that's where you want to go. I mean this country is varied. Just depends on where you end up. Just don't go basing decisions off of stupid stereotypes.
every day I roll my 400 pound ass out to my Hummer so I can drive to the book burning at my local protestant church and masturbate with the flag
I know this sounds weird, but I actually like los angeles and its suburbs. For example my city has 100,000 people, yet you're practically guaranteed to see someone you know when you go out.
Come to Southern California it is amazing
Just don't go to Arizona, we suck ass.
Ya I made this mistake DO NOT GO TO THE SOUTH!!! The only thing down here are rednecks and ghetto black people (I'm not racists but there are less white peolpe in my school then there are black and every one at that school has an IQ of very low.)
lol Also, Houston is relatively nice, at least my area is. Sure, we have crime here and there but it's relatively nice. Can be pretty bad too in some parts. Last year on the street next to mine, there was a person stabbed to death, and a few weeks back a house 2 away from mine got robbed. Then again I live about 20 minutes away from downtown so it doesn't suprise me since I live in the middle zone.
Ya I made this mistake DO NOT GO TO THE SOUTH!!! Stay out of the South and you should, for the most part, be fine. I'd recommend coming to Utah. As long as you stay away from the Provo/Salt Lake area it's really quite nice and the mormons actually aren't that bad.

I'm from the south and I back the "everyone's a Redneck" (yes including me) part but the whole IQ thing is just plain o'l bullshit i'm pretty damn smart for who I am the only people you clearly ran into are the idiots and you didn't give anyone a chance to show their true genius. I'm really getting tired of these stereotypes guys at least make one that doesn't make us look like a bunch of dumb ass's. Don't judge a book by it's cover and actually give everyone a chance. Also America in my opinion sucks and i's a natural born citizen of said "great country" yes we have a lot of freedoms and everything but just so ya'll know its not all that great.
The south is fine and even though the backwater country areas can get a little stereotypical redneck-y you're pretty much fine because you'd be in the suburbs or in a city.
I'm considering moving away. Everything I liked about it here has slowly been buried under a wave of stupid politicians.
The south is fine and even though the backwater country areas can get a little stereotypical redneck-y you're pretty much fine because you'd be in the suburbs or in a city.
Ok this I will let slip by me because it is in fact true it can get a lil bit to Redneck when you get far enough. But that's how I like it and ain't no city boy gonna change that (No offence to the city boys) but for real you southern haters need to come down here and have some fun. Now the farthest north I went was Santa Clause Indiana and i'm not going any higher than that! In case your wondering i'm in Kentucky which is a nice state to live in as long (Not trying to be offensive just saying) your not Gay, Black, Annoying, Full out city boy, Hater, or anything of the sort. I'm thinking of moving out of this state myself so i'm not suggesting you come here, a lot of people who came here left and went back from whence they came because of the level of horribleness this state is. I wish you best of luck in finding a good place to stay but just remember this "Home is were you make it." Now have a nice day or morning I don't have the least bit of an idea what time it is were your at.
L.A. all day every day Or for you foreigners, "hollywood"
Florida is a great place, except the weather. No one likes warm rain. it's horrible, also the alligators watch out for them
It seems that this thread has lots of stereotypes waltzing through here... The South is 100% redneck, the cities are 100% scary and ghetto, the everywhere else is 100% something else.... Not quite. I live in Atlanta, GA. Suburbs North of the city out of school and downtown Atlanta when University is in session. There are, of course, plenty of backwoods places you can go to to find rednecks, and there are plenty of scary places you can go in Atlanta. It's all completely different though. The South is hot and humid for the most part, and it gets much worse in FL (nearly always sticky weather) the locale varies completely on different places. Georgia alone is a great example. Southern Georgia is quite rednecky, mid-GA has Atlanta and the metro Atlanta area which is highly diverse but is a very black (race) city due to the high hip-hop and rap scene. Northern GA has some of the friendliest rural people I have ever met along with some weird backroads hillbilly parts. But it also has one end of the Appalachian Trail. The rest of the country is the same. Look up states, not the country. The states are what makes this country unique and it is much different than other countries because each states here is nearly a country in other areas of the world. It's hard to describe. Anyway. Do more research, especially outside of Facepunch. GA is much more different than California or even the states near it like the Carolinas or Tennessee. And each major city is different. I've heard New Yorkers are very rude, while in my experience, people in Atlanta are genuinely kind (generally). LA is different than both of these, as is Chicago... etc. Do research, it's a fascinating place here. Just don't get butthurt over the politics and you'll be fine. PS: The public schools of urban Atlanta are pretty bad right now, so I wouldn't go to the city here if you need high school. There was a bunch of crap about the standardized testing here recently and I don't know if they're redoing it or what. The metro area (outside of urban area) is great though. The suburbs are really nice and you can still go to the city for fun time if you want.
Florida is a great place, except the weather. No one likes warm rain. it's horrible, also the alligators watch out for them
OFF TOPIC: Your avatar is win. Drunk people are hilarious. I went to Florida for vacation and we had to leave when a hurricane attacked us.... Also the grass there annoys me it feels like walking on pineapple leaves but other than that Florida was a awesome place for vacation. Loved that ocean, the waves, and other stuff like that.
its the same everywhere
So cal is nice. I live in San Diego. It's a great place in my opinion. The country as a whole may be falling to shit but It's not going to dissolve and die out like some crazy people say, It's just in a slump. As far as living here I love it, Don't plan on leaving really. Surf, Sun, lots of attractive people IMO. Everyone is nicer in SD than in LA, and with less smog and Slum. There's a lot of beach culture too, plenty of friendly people because of it as well... It's also not the most expensive place to live, but I'm not saying its cheap either.
Oh yeah we're all just a bunch of fatasses who eat McDonalds and fast food. I'm so tired of hearing that stupid stereotype. I live in the Georgia which is the south, of course. Believe it or not we're not all "hicks" and "rednecks". Georgia is a pretty nice place to live considering there isn't that much crime around where I am. You probably wouldn't want to be near downtown Atlanta though.

I'm still waiting for it to finely collapse under the weight of failure. Federal government almost went down like a year ago didn't it?

Under hostile occupation, buried in debt, overly involved in the middle east, full of fat lunatics. Bail out while you still can.
Socal is incredibly nice. Beach is 20 minutes in one direction, snowy mountains are a bit under an hour in the other. It's awesome.
Let me tell you about America... It fucking sucks , the people are ugly and are douchebags, there's a ton of crime and pollution, and the cost of living is sky high. On the flip side there's awesome scenic places ( Las Vegas, Yosemite, Yellow Stone. ), beautiful girls, nice hard working people, and awesome people. I've never been to any other country or any state other than Hawaii, but we have it better than quite a few countries out there to say the least. I'd like to leave California. The San Francisco Bay Area is beautiful and all, I'd recommend coming out here for sure there's a ton of history, but I'd rather settle down somewhere quiet someday with my girl. There's too much light pollution here and the traffic is a nightmare. [editline]25th November 2011[/editline]
Socal is incredibly nice.
new england is the best part of america come here
Don't do it. They're all a bunch of douchebags. [editline]25th November 2011[/editline] Then again Orange County and the Hollywood area has a ton of douchebags. Oh well, I don't wanna be even close to those jersey shore assholes.
