You are telling them to do something they don't have the mental capacity to do. If someone thinks they're helpless and worthless already, the last thing you want them to do is feel even more incapable of improving themselves. You're making them feel worse than everyone else because you're trivializing their struggle. What your saying is the worst thing a depressed person can hear next to "kill yourself".
