Much like fractions cancelling out common factors, you must match like units with ones opposite to to the one you want to convert. If I want to convert an inch to a foot, it would be as follows:
1 inch * (1 foot / 12 inches)
The inch unit cancels out, leaving a number and the foot unit, giving us the answer, 1/12 th of a foot.
