tbf rust isn't really what I'd call a fun game
rust sucks a 3 is the proper score
its fun if you just roam about and just waltz into unlocked bases/homes grabbing up everything that isn't bolted down
but if you yourself build anything less than bin ladens compound, you'll be dead and it'll be completely destroyed and ransacked next time you login by a group of kiddies with 3k+ hours in the game
there is a serious lack of depth in the game to keep me hooked for longer than it takes for a twig base to be completely destroyed. it's not really fun to be towered by several players who have spent the past twenty four hours laying down an empire, actively harassing you while you try to carve out a place of your own.
there isn't much for fresh joins to do at that point, and this is a flaw seen in the majority of survival games out there atm

Rust is fun when you play with friends, and don't play on Facepunch servers. I have great memories of our playthroughs.

Mods are cool, but speaking only for myself, it's not mods that make Rust fun, but the players, especially how many of them there are.
I always go for low-population servers so I don't have to invest as much time in building a base or competing against other players. If you play against other players who invest as much time as you do, the game becomes much more enjoyable than if you were playing against a huge clan.
My playthroughs only last about a week anyways, so by the time the server gets wiped, I've had my fill of Rust for a while, and I'm not disappointed that I lost my base because I didn't invest too heavily into it.

It's well armed and fortified, but it wouldn't ever last against a clan. However, on the low-population server I played on, this wasn't a problem.
The community for Rust is still something else. People STILL play seriously on the official servers despite borderline hourly threads complaining about cheaters and lack of moderators. They still want an anti-cheat that erases your entire bloodline for even thinking of cheating. People banned for hacks [b][i]STILL[/B][/I] try to claim an anti-cheat false positive.
I said this years ago and it still holds true: The Rust community rivals the early Ragnarok Online community in lack of intelligence and entitlement. If you played IRO back in the day you know what I am talking about.

Long term goal is to remove wipes, the main reason why they also exist is so worlds can be regenerated to feature new content.
Will then remain up to the administrator if and when a wipe will happen
