He described doing so as avoiding such problems as "Gandalf isn't that tall!!" that other adaptations end up having when they give too many details. This lets them pick the best actors for each role without fear of having to turn someone down based on certain features.

Why can't I choose if I want to install the single player, multiplayer or both? DOOM is taking up like 75GB and most of it is that multiplayer mode which is heresy in my eyes. Or the battlefield games with their lackluster campaigns.
