Does anyone remember the explanation to that they had in Star Trek: Next Generation? It was something about the first intelligent race ever in the universe finding themselves alone. Wanting to leaving their mark in the universe to make future intelligent races aware of their existence even after they died out, they made modifications to the DNA structure of several species that were predicted to evolve into advanced civilizations in the future (humans, vulcan etc) and that was claimed as the reason the intelligent races look so alike.

Please correct me, someone who knows the details.
