I wonder if the Steam and the PC-DVD versions of the game can play together, or if they are separate. They should be able to if they both use the GameSpy service. I should ask my brother, he has the Steam version, while I got the PC-DVD version for Christmas.

the first was a TPS, the 2nd is an FPS and TPS
and no you dont need a joystick, keyboard + mouse works fine

It's a switch third person / first person shooter. You start out default in first person but you can switch to third person and back at any time. All vehicles automatically activate third person and only some of them have a first person view, and all Jedi and Sith are always third person.
You can use a joystick for space combat if you want, but it's not necessary. I just use my mouse and try to stay away from the enemy ships' autoturret grids to take down spacefaring enemies easier. But I think that it's always more fun to destroy enemy ships' systems from the inside by landing in and blasting your way to their critical points, then rocketing them to oblivion.
