• Should References be allowed in SH?

with this rule in place, replies in SH might as well be disallowed but if that happens then reddit is more of my main news source than ever
What kind of in-depth discussion are you going to get out of "China is considering maybe mining the moon for some nuclear fuel in the distant future" anyway?
If there's no discussion to be had, then don't make it
If there's no discussion to be had, then don't make it
But if there's no discussion to be obstructed, then why care if somebody makes a joke?
while saying FP can have a better/more thoughtful discussion than say, neogaf or the dailymail is correct, it's still not that much more thoughtful or even noticeably so. Remember that Facepunches highlights throughout the years include a kid spending $1000 on a forum gadget, making fun of a boy that drowned because Sonic and Justin.... CUNT! FP isn't known for thoughtful discussion because it's mostly absent, case in point, the largely failed mass debate section.
remember when shitty jokes were consistently banned in SH and it became a rare event to allow people to make dumb austin powers jokes for a week we've historically made a point to disallow dumb jokes and gag references in SH. Being used to it doesn't mean it's the default normal
while saying FP can have a better/more thoughtful discussion than say, neogaf or the dailymail is correct, it's still not that much more thoughtful or even noticeably so.
I don't like the banning of jokes either but neogaf/dailymail have nothing on FP. Those places are pure trash.
i don't think bans are what keeps FP medium quality, i'd actually give some credit to the old elitist school of thought that most FPers held (i was one of those guys too, this isn't some high-and-mighty bullshit) before so there's kind of an unspoken rule that you don't type like you're posting on the official gaia forums
Do you guys who want to ban a post for a pun have any sense of humor? Do you guys, like, never have cracked a joke in your entire life in a conversation? Because that's what it feels like with this.

Did they get repossessed when you were late on your Gold payment?
To be honest, Facepunch is one of the best self-regulated forums I've seen. Most of the time in most threads, people seem to be generally well-behaved. There's dozens of threads which I'm pretty sure not a single moderator has ever read, which have gotten along smoothly. Most of the time when a shitstorm brews up is almost when people seem to deliberately one to stir one up (particularly with certain threads or posts being posted by certain posters).
Seeing puns, references, and epic le maymays in every single thread got old a long time ago, I think SH should just be shut down, and in it's place there should be two new sub-forums, the first being a casual shitshow where people can post all the stupid "news" articles they find on 9gag that can only be replied to with references and memes, like "Florida man caught eating a hobo's face in downtown Miami" or "leaked nudes of <insert celebrity here> discovered", and the other being a serious news sub-forum meant for proper discussions, where stuff like reports on current wars or new scientific/medical discoveries are posted. [editline]1st February 2015[/editline] The casual news sub-forum could be called Fast Threads: News Edition, or better yet just divert all idiotic "news" articles to Fast Threads and make SH serious discussions only.
Stop comparing SH to 9gag/shitty subreddits. It is quite a bit better than that and you know it.
"epic zinger" really seems to be at the discretion of whoever is reading it
Just to add in my two cents here; A sense of humor is a pretty subjective thing. Some people might not find certain jokes funny because of a given reason (such as a certain style of humor not appealing to them) but don't deny that other people might find the same things funny. If you think they're dumb for finding something funny, that's your problem, not the problem of the other guy. You can tell them that you don't find it funny, but labeling them as dumb for not being on the same page as you smacks of hubris in my opinion. As for 'historically' banning dumb puns and jokes in SH, I feel that we may need to step back and see where things went wrong here. There's always going to be people who try and make dumb snipes and shitty unrelated 'jokes' in some threads. You can't stop it from happening. Short of banning those aforesaid individuals, but you can't permanently stop it. I also feel that a no jokes rule is more suited to a section on the lines of the former Mass Debate, should it ever return for whatever reason. People make good puns and good jokes now and then. Humor doesn't have to be culled blanket-wise. This is a forum on the internet, not a political caucus for the next election. Rules exist to keep the discussions semi-civilized. Making up rules for no reason other than 'we don't want to see this here' especially after the last time something like this happened (the previous pun ban, which I wasnt around for) isn't going to be very popular with the community in any case. But then, the community doesn't really have a say in what goes on here to begin with, garry and the mods are the only ones who determine what goes and what doesn't. I personally don't believe in making up a bunch of written and unwritten rules just to keep the discussions penned up in a certain fashion. The real problem, if you consider things carefully in SH, wasn't the avalanche of bad jokes - it was the shitposters who started shit for the sake of doing so, and started flinging stones about and threadshitting without being stopped in a number of cases. Part of the fault here is with the community for not constantly reporting those posts to the mods. At worst you could just PM a mod if you feel it hasn't been acted on. SH as a section would be that much better if the civil discussions part was enforced more strictly when arguments started getting out of hand. The 'why reply' rule should be more strictly enforced in SH threads, otherwise I feel nothing more has to be changed. And in any case, why make a problem of something that was never really much of one in the first place? it's just a few lines of text that if you don't like, you can just scroll past and move on, and read those posts that you do like.
it's just a few lines of text that if you don't like, you can just scroll past and move on, and read those posts that you do like.
i'm just gonna make a post here real quick so it's possible to scroll by yours then
The 'why reply' rule should be more strictly enforced in SH threads, otherwise I feel nothing more has to be changed.
but that basically is what is happening. If the only reason you post is to post an epic mad zinger or videogame reference, then it definitely falls under "why reply".
If that's the case, where are the capital letters in your post? Did they get repossessed when you were late on your Gold payment?
i'm talking more about post content rather than grammar shit :v:
i'm talking more about post content rather than grammar shit :v:
Smartness -1 :v:
Part of the reason I go to SH is for the good puns. The good puns is where its at, but when some kids get massacred or some shit and someone is joking around then yeah, ban away.
Only Garry's Mod and Rust references allowed, to even it up in the middle.
if this ended up the case then all we have to do to reference anything would be about how some kid is gonna get on and yell at you about how's he'll ddos you if you ban him
Rather take a whitty reference to a blatantly biggoted post everyday but I seem to be in the very slim majority
1. Every time I go to SH, I expect to see a joke in the first few posts. This is a problem, seeing as everyone tries way too hard within that short-time span, and the idea of a SH pun has long past run into the ground. Too many people are unqualified to crack these jokes and the jokes are almost always predictable or hardly tied in very well, so it's almost it's own type of meme reply, seeing as all memes suffer the exact same fate. 2. Purely referential humor is almost always unfunny. (see brony, and furry humor for more information on how to capitalize on this type of humor) 3. Nothing is added to the conversation. [editline]9th February 2015[/editline] You know what should be the rule? If you aren't funny and crack a SH joke, you get permabanned. If you are funny, then woo woo. It should be at the discretion of the moderators. Problem solved for both sides of the argument.
The first post was
nazis are going to be pretty fucking upset (User was banned for this post ("Rules: "Don't post just to put your epic reference"" - Big Dumb American))
Regardless of the dumb reference rule, this would have taken a ban for dumb snipe anyways.
Wait, what? It was a great post, I had so much fun posting it, what the hell do you mean by "dump snipe"?
is this poll over? are references allowed now? yes clearly won
Of course! facepunch is a democracy after all
Wait, what? It was a great post, I had so much fun posting it, what the hell do you mean by "dump snipe"?
That post was exactly the kind of post the mods wanted to get rid of by enacting this rule
where's the poll to ban every post from having vowels so we only communicate with consonants cz tht sht tght
hh gs yr rght, dynmt d brth That should be an entire subforum.
OIFY was hidden for a reason you know.
Yes please keep them, I can't go a day without referencing something stupid. They are pretty much just meme replies.
Bit of a necro-post, but there seems to be a very big double-standard with the whole SH reference bans. Video game references are banned, but movie references are fine even though they contribute the same thing. So are references banned or not?
