Most scientists today think that when the sun expands into a red giant (it will not supernova, as it's too small), the earth will actually remain, for the most part, unharmed. They've discovered that due to increased solar winds and electromagnetic fields the Earth will most likely just be "pushed" out to a further orbit. Nonetheless, I wouldn't want to be living here when it happens.
I think the world will end in one of two ways, either A) when the sun contracts into a dwarf star and possibly sucks the Earth in with it, or B) the "Big Rip" at the end of time.

Upon further reading it seems there's an option C. The Sun will also become a nebula, and nebulae are known areas of high plasma concentration. The plasma may actually scorch the Earth into a crisp/assimilate Earth into itself.
Wow everyones idea's of the end of the world are ridiculous and impossible.
