Eeehhhh no They put Galileo on permanant home arrest because he said the earth wasn't the center of the universe. People had to have an underground science black market-type shit so the catholic church wouldn't execute them.
Actually the Galileo thing is a bit more complicated than that. Basically in the early 17th century, nobody was actually sure if Galileo was right or not. The Church at the time said he could promote his findings as a hypothesis, but he was prohibited from stating it as a fact because of the lack of evidence (at that time, astronomers were still trying to figure it out). Galileo could have even gotten away with stating it as a fact rather than a hypothesis, but he had the misfortune to have made a lot of political enemies too, who used this fact to blackmail him. It isn't because of the Church wanting to suppress science. They were pissed that he was trying to promote something yet unproven as fact, and they even let him off after the first arrest on the condition he stopped saying it was a fact and it was an unproven hypothesis. It seems odd to say that the church is opposed to science when there is a patron saint of scientists (Albertus Magnus), a monk who developed the science of genetics (Gregor Mendel) and a priest who developed the big bang theory (Georges Lemaître). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_Catholic_cleric-scientists I mean, it was even a Catholic priest who developed the theory that the sun was at the center of the solar system itself (Mikolaj Kopernik). It wasn't just the church in which there was controversy about the earth being at the center or not, because a lot of secular scientists and astronomers kept arguing against Copernican theory until at late as the 18th century.
They were pissed because educating their uninformed cultists meant they would have less power. Just because a priest did something sciencey, doesn't mean the church didn't try to supress it. Copernicus is a good example of that. Clerics =/ the whole church. Most of the corruption was at the top. Sadly that's where most of the influence lies.
But this wasn't the reason for the controversy at all. The point is that Galileo got into trouble for political reasons rather than his scientific arguments. At that time there wasn't enough evidence to support his argument. He got into trouble because he stated it as fact rather than as a hypothesis. For instance, Tycho Brahe made the convincing argument that if the Earth orbited the sun, you would observe a particular stellar parallax during the year. It existed, but it wasn't detected until the 19th century, and it was something that the Copernican model couldn't account for. There was a similar problem with physics and biology in the late 19th century. Evolution obviously implied that the earth was obviously more than 20 million years old, but nobody could prove how the sun could have lasted so long, because the science of that time was unable to account for how the sun generated so much energy over such a long time.
Bae, on fleek, and trap queen are the 3 dumbest terms my ears have bad the grace of hearing
I need to go get my Astronomy 201 notes if I'm going to post more, I'm blurry on my facts.
Ultimately, a lot of people these days are in the business of claiming that there is some kind of conflict between science and religion. My view on the matter is that no such controversy exists and both can coexist quite happily, reconciled with one another. Even looking at the middle ages, virtually every educational establishment was founded by the church. The Jesuits virtually own the field of seismology, and the church readily accepts evolutionary theory. I don't see there being a conflict if the church has done as much to promote science and philosophy as much as it already has.
Bae, on fleek, and trap queen are the 3 dumbest terms my ears have bad the grace of hearing
smh fam
Oh yeah, I forgot fam. Those are the worst words to ever grace my eyes or ears, they cause a loathing deep within my soul.
Bae, on fleek, and trap queen are the 3 dumbest terms my ears have bad the grace of hearing
I wasn't sure this was even English until I'd gotten half way through it.
I think that Rick & Morty shoehorns "emotional" moments that feel cheap and out of place. I always see fans talking about [sp]omg when rick tries to kill imhself omg!!! so sad[/sp]. I like the show but its never going to an elecit an emotional reaction from me with those types of scenes, the only thing that came close [sp]was when rick and morty killed their alternative selves and replaced them because that was some trippy shit but i dont care about family drama[/sp]
I agree but for a different reason, it's very hard for me to get emotional towards fictional things in general.
no one should be offended by slurs
Nothing wrong with being offended about things but it doesn't entitle you to anything and doesn't justify violence.
smh fam
When did fam start to become used so often? Urban Dictionary says it's been around for at least a decade but I've only started seeing it the past few months.
When did fam start to become used so often? Urban Dictionary says it's been around for at least a decade but I've only started seeing it the past few months.
My guess is that fam is short for "family." Like people are so close to you that you consider them family. It's still dumb. "Hey, let's make a new word by cutting out half of an existing word that sounds like a sheep being castrated!" Also I gotta agree with some of Sobotnik's posts. Catholicism is pretty flexible. You're not required to go to church, since the teachings have always been about your own home being the one true church or the one place closest to God. Your views were always told by close friends, yourself, and loved ones as doing so to complete strangers could provoke unwanted conflict (at least that's what I heard.) Respecting others and the environment was a big thing too, taking priority than the messages themselves. I'm just a bit mad that people lump Christianity and Catholics together just to save time on "decent" arguments. To keep this from being a big argument, I'll also say that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a good game.
When did fam start to become used so often? Urban Dictionary says it's been around for at least a decade but I've only started seeing it the past few months.
IDK, I think it started being popular when black twitter got popular and now everyone pretends they talk like a fucking idiot smh tbh fam
When did fam start to become used so often? Urban Dictionary says it's been around for at least a decade but I've only started seeing it the past few months.
I think it has something to do with those "black" Twitter/Facebook posts that seemed to be everywhere all of a sudden.
I always thought it was an Insane Clown Posse thing.
Bae, on fleek, and trap queen are the 3 dumbest terms my ears have bad the grace of hearing
True, trap royalty shouldn't require any gendered terms. On another note, Islam is the best religion because of kebabs and the stylin clothes. Fight me irl if you disagree.
Racing games are fucking boring 99% of the time. I wouldn't be caught dead paying $70 for a racing game.
I thought for a long time I just didn't like racing games at all, but then I played F-Zero for the SNES recently and had a blast, and realized that no, I do like some racing games, I just don't give a shit about cars at all and would rather race in sick ass future ass space-cars
Racing games are fucking boring 99% of the time. I wouldn't be caught dead paying $70 for a racing game.
It's the realistic ones that kill me. Things like blur, f-zero, and etc.. are fine tho.
the order 1886 was ok
Total War is actually shit and the developers suck even harder. Except for Medieval 2 and Rome 1.
Total War is actually shit and the developers suck even harder. Except for Medieval 2 and Rome 1.
I hold the opposite view, except I think Empire and Rome 2 are shit
Total War is actually shit and the developers suck even harder. Except for Medieval 2 and Rome 1.
A shamfur dispray! Attila: Total War is a step in the right direction.
Racing games are fucking boring 99% of the time. I wouldn't be caught dead paying $70 for a racing game.
I wouldn't be caught dead paying more than $40 for ANY game. The hell is this obsession with paying $50, $60, sometimes fucking $110 for a game at launch? You have to have patience and plenty to do. Shit, Arkham Origins was out for a month before I bought Arkham Asylum. GOTY edition for $20 and did the same for Arkham City ($20 for GOTY) and Origins over a year later ($15, $5 for Cold Heart) Great games but I feel truly sorry for people that paid more than $30 for them, feel really bad for the ones that paid $50 at launch. You should wait minimum a full year before purchasing anything that's more than $40. I really pisses me off when I hear these people saying they paid over $100 for their "DELUXE ULTRA SPECIAL COLLECTORS RUBY GOLD SILVER GOTY LIMITED" edition. You know what you can get for $100? Mother fucker $100 is just $30 shy of my auto insurance for a month. Stop paying more than $40 for ANY games, because if you don't then these companies are going to release games at $100, that's going to be the new normal and people are going to be going "$75 FUCKING HELL IT'S 50% OFF!" The bargain bin price is going to go from $20 to $50, and it's going to take 15-20 years for it to drop under $20 instead of 5-10 years. Better to buy 3 or 4 games, sometimes 5 for $60 then 1 for $60. End rant/opinion
I hold the opposite view, except I think Empire and Rome 2 are shit
Alright I was to harsh, but their marketing strategy is a bit wonky tbh.
Alright I was to harsh, but their marketing strategy is a bit wonky tbh.
It's marching orders from Sega most likely Now I'm about to say something that might bring rage but I'm going to say it: I don't think Half-Life 3 should ever be released, it's been 8 years since episode 2 and I can't bear the idea of it getting the Duke Nukem Forever treatment.
Martin Skreli is a peice of shit.
