33 x 42 = 1386
126 + 126 = - Wait...1386 What?
126 + 126 = 252...
126 x 126 = 15876
Do you not know the rule of adding a invisible 0 at the end and moving it over 1?
I do it the same way as the OP, have done since primary school..
I use a calculator. It's what everyone uses in highschool, college, and university for multiplying large numbers together.
Oh, I get the way you do it, you basically do it the same way as other people do it, except you do it from bottom to top.
It's the same thing except you're doing it the other way around.
Like 39x10, you do it 10x39

I used to do math in the "Window Pane" fashion, but then I got a graphing calculator.
Needless to say, my multiplication skills since the purchase of a graphing calculator have declined sharply.

If you can understand this, welcome to 2nd grade.

Being able to do long multiplication really isn't a skill you'll ever need, calculators really are the way to go.
Like what others said, some are taught by starting from top to bottom than the other way of starting bottom to top.Its still the same way and answer regardless of what number is over what.
Basically you use the same method your mother does. You just interchange the two values.
She does 2*33+40*33
You do 3*42+30*42
The method is exactly the same you just use the above to multiply by digits whereas your mother (and all of the people I know) use the below number.
Do that:
42
x 33
----
Also, there is no "right" way.
Gentlemen (and any ladies we may have in here)

This is how I multiply...
