• If I have one 1333MHz RAM stick and one 1600MHz stick, will anything be throttled/bottlenecked?

I've never had a power supply 'blow up' on me. Always just bought the cheapest one which was the wattage I wanted, and there's never been any issue. Maybe I'm just really lucky or something.
thanks guys for your help. ill ask on whirlpool.net as well and see what they say (since they're all australian and can gimme good info on psu's and prices locally) BTW I used to have a SHAW 750W psu aswell (and used it for 2+ years), but I knew they were awful so I got this thermaltake at least I didn't buy another shaw, right?
Always had fairly high spec (for the time anyway) gaming machines, my old computer had some random PSU I got for £15 which ran it's i7 920 and a 5870 happily for several years. Current PC has this: 600W Corsair CX, Semi-Modular, 80PLUS Bronze and a i7 4970k with a GTX 770 and it seems to be running strong. I remember the PSU being on sale on Amazon for like £20 so I got it. That one seems to at least have the 80PLUS Bronze thing you guys mentioned, but my older PC which has been relegated to playing solitaire for my mum is certainly running some no brand cheapo PSU and has been happy for years. Apologies for the slight derail, I guess I am just curious about power supplies since you mentioned them exploding and stuff haha
yeah i've never ever had or seen a psu explode before so honestly i can't help but be a bit skeptical 'oh maybe they're just paranoid!!!'
I have had a PSU 'blow up' on me, but the system was undamaged. The OVP and OCP are there for a reason. Although there is a chance they could fail, those guys were definitely being paranoid. There's always value in having a high quality PSU, but if you can't afford it then don't worry too much about it.
corsair psus are good and even a 400-500 watt one is cheap if you know where to go, I got fine for like $25 and it's lasted pretty good
I couldn't get the expensive Corsair ones and being a bit tight for money I got the Corsair CX500 instead. So it's not perfect but I hope it'll get the job done [editline]2nd January 2015[/editline] Also this is happening [img]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19296530/Things/Images%20of%20other%20stuff/6gb12gb.png[/img] It says I can only use 6gb of my 12gb RAM That means it's def able to use some of the 8gb stick I bought since I have a 4gb and 8gb stick [editline]2nd January 2015[/editline] I remember changing it through windows settings to be exactly 6144mb but I completely forgot how [editline]2nd January 2015[/editline] I remember definitely seeing a dialogue and setting it to 6144MB of ram i dont remember where to go though [editline]2nd January 2015[/editline] Nevermind, found it, it's in msconfig boot options to set max memory
Corsair cx500 is fine.
[QUOTE=Reagy;46834888]Looking for something with good reviews, it can be multi-rail. Its what people say about the reliability and performance that counts the most (single rail is still good idea though). Also don't take this wrong, but you're seriously cheapening out on the most important and vital part of your system, to put it into consideration I put £48.50 to mine (OCZ ZS Series 550W) which is around $75, anything under that price bracket you'll be looking at an IED.[/QUOTE] Calling everything sub-$75 "Trash" doesn't (or didn't 2-3 years ago at least) hold true - I'd say around ~$50, and you can get something reliable at $40 if you're lucky. Newegg prices, mind you.

Maybe I'm just really lucky or something.[/QUOTE] Same. It won't blow up if you aren't planning on overclocking stuff or putting a bunch of fans and other power heavy components. I had a PSU that i used for 6-7 years until it started giving off a high pitched noise, which i think was mainly due to me taking it apart a few times. Some screws went missing and the fan might have been a little loose... I continued using it for a few days until that noise made go crazy then replaced it with an equally old but worse and not as used one that my friend gave me. Been using that for a year or two, so far no problems with it, everything runs fine. Well, i do have a problem with it. It only has 3 power cables, and since i'm powering 2 HDDs (one of them is like 7 years old and has around 1000+ days used and several bad sectors) and an SSD, i can't power my CD and DVD drives at the same time, but who needs those anymore in this age?
[QUOTE=Marhaus;46841097]Corsair cx500 is fine.[/QUOTE] corsair is a solid brand for PSU's in all legitimacy. A good bit of this thread is people overreacting about PSU's. Like unless you're doing shit really wrong, even a budget psu can be fine, just remember that you do get what you pay for. But if you ever start to really push limits or are just really shit at building, do more research into the psu you are buying. But on basic 'gaming' rigs a large amount of the budget psu's will be fine. Most of the folks here are just exhibiting extreme caution which is fair and responsible as this is a power supply and if this thing goes it can range from being minor and just frying the psu to major and burning your house down.
