All my art friends, I'm an art kid so this is going to be really biased, say that the worst thing to happen to the bay is the tech community and I kind of have to agree with them. It's expensive as fuck everywhere now and the culture is really dying because of it.
I would say "gentrification sucks" but I don't how unpopular of an opinion that would be. Though from what I usually see it's a bad thing.

Like when I first entered college (Berkeley) I told some SF friends I was going to study a STEM major, probably switching to a more art oriented form but whatever, and they were slightly insulted because their first impression of me became negative all because of what I represented.

i think its a good and bad thing. its nice that the properties are getting fixed but why the fuck do you have to fix it for new people? I can understand if people fuck up the property after they fixed it, but if they fixed up a place for the people who currently live there and they keep the place nice, i don't see how they can't just do it like that?

I always get suspicious when actual pictures of the interior are taken from a certain angle or cropped a specific way (really narrow pictures of an area of a room), it makes me think they're hiding something, like the true size of a room. That place looks small as hell anyway. $500 a week? That's pretty much $2k a month for what looks like a single room and a bathroom.

yeah, i have to have a few out of state options (go Louisiana State and Hawaii), but I really would like to stay in California. but again, UC will be really hard considering all the competition :(

It sucks for the people that originally lived in certain neighborhoods. Those people usually stay in those neighborhoods because it's cheap enough that they can eek out a living to afford to live there, and other decent places are either too expensive or too far away. If a neighborhood gets gentrified, the current residents end up having to leave by default because they probably can't find a job that allows them to make up for the rising rent, so they're screwed out of a home they struggled to pay for from the start.
Just got home from work and stopped by Wal-mart on my way home so I could finally pick up my protein powder.
God damn I was worried when I walk out (This is 1:40AM) and two guys are near my car smoking, who weren't there before. You never fucking know. So I get in my car after putting my stuff away, blast my music and get the hell out of there.
You know, to make myself look cool in front of the strangers that could potentially mug me, that's important. Now the other muggers will hear from those guys and be like "Dude, he had protein powder and looked so cool, don't mess with him".
