Two ways: Application to concept or concept to application.
If I want to do something like a certain gameplay element in a game, I work out the concept that'll work with it.
If I found or thought up a neat concept (think of genetic programming), I try to find an application.
Careful when combining the two though. Once you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail etc.
If you just want experience for programming, make a game.
Dealing with shaders, physics, multiplayer, particles, physical rendering, web development for your game, community/press interaction if you go far enough, etc will expand your horizons quite a bit.
Go take a dump.
Once you lose all the shit that was bothering you, your mind enters a clairvoyant state.
But be careful! Indulging in it for too long will leave you with a crusty ass crack.
