I have spent the past 4 days (as in all 8 hours of the work day) trying to figure out why I couldn't get SharePoint to create and run the User Profile Synchronization Service correctly.
It all worked fine and peachy when I did it through Central Administration, but my job is to automate this shit, and that means PowerShell. Whenever I made the UPS Sync through PowerShell, it would hang on "Starting" and just stay there for hours and hours.
Finally, today, I found out why.

So despite the fact that Microsoft's own security suggestions say to [B]NEVER[/B] log on locally as the farm account, you apparently have to do it in order to use Powershell to set up SharePoint, unless you use their workaround:
