In the vast majority of cases, no. If they are CEOs, bankers, politicians and such then the probability of a "yes" rises sharply, but still most probably no. Maybe if I knew the world would go to hell if I didn't (therefore indirectly causing my death), then maybe yes. Though I'd probably do shit that could get me killed to save them (try and put my shoulder in front of a bullet to avoid it lodging in a president's skull, for example).
no, but i would kill you to save 1,000 lives
No, doesn't matter who they are, I wouldn't.
Hard question. I would donate one of my organs, if i saved 1.000 people though.... Somehow.
Who are these 1,000 people? For the most part I would be an asshole and live.
I know it's mean and selfish or whatever, but no. I would quite happily let those people die rather than kill myself. Unless they included people I know and stuff. Then it'd be difficult. If it was just 1000 random people out of the billions on the planet, then no - in all probability, I'd know roughly 0% of those randomers personally.
Tertium quid.
Actually fuck it, thinking about it it's a no in any case. The "would do shit that could endanger me to save an important person" still goes though, if the risk:reward ratio is right.

Also I guarantee almost everyone in this thread that said they would wouldn't if they actually had to.
Yes, I would kill 1000 people to save myself, or was it the other way? :unsmith:
I would. My life sucks.
Fuck no, this world's already way too overpopulated.

If I am one of the 1,000 lives... :v: no.
Yes, I would to save 1000 people :smithicide:
Wouldn't exactly kill myself, but I would gladly go out in a blaze of glory for a 1,000 lives.
It's hard to say, and to be honest I'm sure most people voting "yes" are just trying to act noble.
I'd kill 1000 muslims.
nope.
Nope.
No. Humanity needs a few edges clipped off, the 1000 can die
I wouldn't. [editline]19th January 2011[/editline]
I would. My life sucks.
Emo.
Unless this was a situation where i knew 100% that 1000 people would die if i were not to act i would not. If this situation was known only by me that someone was going to kill 1000 people the outcome would be un-predictable. The reason i would not kill myself to save possibly 1000 people is because after i die i would only be remembered as the crazy guy that killed another man and died in the process. Not that i saved 1000 people or that i did anything to prevent such a crime. However if 1000 people were standing around and someone said that i needed to die to save these 1000 people i still would not do it. Most likely this would be a stupid religious ceremony and killing yourself to remove the sin is just a way for someone to write a book about you (Jesus knew what was what). Also if i died i wouldn't really care or even know what was to happen to the 1000 people. So either way its pointless for you to kill yourself to save anyone because the outcomes are unpredictable. Jesus for example was cut out of the book deal shortly after he died and his family never got the funds from his life story. Jesus sacrificed his life for his family's well being and financial security. And we all know how that turned out. Edit - Also on behalf of George w bush his answer would be "no".
Depends on who I would be saving. If my friends and family are in there, probably. Random people I'll never meet? No. Not a chance.
I'd say no and blame the person who put me in this position.
Are these people evil? If it's just 1000 random people, maybe. If they're all like, criminals then no, fuck 'em.
If I did not know/care about any of the 1000 people no, I would not give my life away for them no matter their societal value (i.e. president). However if I truly loved even one of those 1000 people I would give it away. But this is only conjecture so it's pretty pointless. I have no idea how I would react in a life and death scenario.
For 1000 completely random people and no guarantee that they die, no. For any 1000 people I had sufficient reason to believe would actually die if I didn't, yes. I can't come up with a reasonable scenario where I would have to make such a decision, though.
