dude a replacement door handle is very cheap.

Just get a large hammer, and hammer down on it. This will kill the lock. Proceed to rescue cat and go to hardware shop to replace handle, no??

Put as much duct tape over it as you can, it would mostly stay in one piece when you smash it then.

That would only work if it's a single pane window though.

You can use a power drill and destroy the lock cylinder, unlocking the door (permanently).
Or use a hammer and a chisel and do the same thing.

I've had to bust a couple locks open, before.

If your cat is still in there take this advice.
Get a pen with a metal clip and bend one side of the clip to a 90 degree angle. As shown below.

Get a bobby pin.
Not comes the fun part.

Put the pen part in the bottom side of the lock (With the bent part in), assuming your tumblers are on the top, which I'm sure they are, and secure it into place like so:

Now push the pen part the way you would turn the key to open it, stick the bobby pin in there and play around with the tumblers pushing up and down on all of them.
