I've never seen a 'psychological horror' that worked in... What are they supposed to do? Unnerve you? Make you think about how scary something might be? I just haven't seen a good example that works with anime.

The only good psychological horrors are those that are not psychological horrors but simultaneously several thousand times more terrifying than psychological horrors and put you into a week-long state of dread and existential doubt.
Like the Serial Experiments of Lain or the Shinsekai Yories.

Yeah, trying to be scary doesn't really work as well in animated format as it does in live action or video games. The best psychological horror manga / anime are the ones that are unsettling rather than "scary".
On that note, I am legally obligated to inform you that Shinsekai Yori is a great show and that you should watch it.

Ya see the problem here is that the anime that I found the most 'unsettling' was school days. It provided me dread and existential doubt. Is it therefor the best?

srs tho the current one is hardly representative of higurashi as a whole (it's literally just rena looking through a partially opened door while looking a bit angry - this is cliche as shit, not to mention could be for literally any reason - the image used in mine conveys an ominous aura that's far more in line with how higurashi actually plays out, especially where rena is involved), doesn't use the original logo for the original show, and has the logo cut off for explainable but unacceptable reasons, making it look cliche and shoddy
psychological horror doesn't have to be "oh my god this woman is trying to break the door down to kill the shit out of me", in fact the ominous death stare is far more psychological because you have no idea just how much she's lost it and what she's actually thinking, what she's going to do, why she's doing that, etc etc
she looks sad and gloomy, there is no death stare. The red tones could just as well be romantic

Outside of context I'd say she does look sad and gloomy. But going by the full image, well, she still does look a bit gloomy, but like, murderous gloomy?
Unless the average person didn't look at the full coverart before they'd probably think she was just sad and gloomy.

it's rose red with pretty flowers and a moon, it's pretty damn romantic.
it becomes unromantic because the character is wielding a sword. Without the sword it looks like a sad story,maybe a breakup.

it was never romantic to begin with and the colour palette is hardly romantic what the hell, the flowers are even deliberate visual dissonance
are you being deliberately dense or do you actually believe that the blood red moonlight is not a visual indicator that something is extremely not right, even before we get to her holding her cleaver

However is it a murder mystery in the sense that you can actually solve the murders by using logic.

I'm eleven episodes in. It's not a spoiler to say that loads of people die since that's the entire plot, it's just a matter of how and when.
But here's the thing: there's only been two or three actual fights, and none of them ended with either of them dying, besides one fight with some unnamed red shirts irrelevant to the plot. Every single death has been via surprise attack, sucker-punching them when they let their guard down, backstabbing, or the like. No actual fights.

Pretty much everybody has some sort of ability that would make for a cool fight but most of the time it's just a case of one of them fucking up or being taken by surprise.
