You guys are kind of impressive, i'd never be able to bear the shame of seriously spending time styling an online list of every anime i've personally watched, or even keeping it updated. Like I'm not just trying to be a dick here, I would seriously have stomach aches for days over that shit if I ever did it
I started keeping my MAL early so I wouldn't forget what I'd watched. I rarely ever rate things, though, can't be bothered.
People like stats, and giving those stats a shiny wrapper is fun.

I generally don't watch enough anime for it to be a hassle for me, in fact it's actually really useful since I tend to stop watching shows for weeks at a time and then forget what episode I was on when I finally pick it back up - doubly so for manga.

I use bookmarks to MAL listing stuff I'm watching, watched, on hold, and to be watched (which is several times larger than my Steam backlog).
I couldn't be bothered to sign up to MAL.
