I can personally vouch for this game, Play this. I am not going to spoil the coolest game mechanic. If you played it you know what I am talking about.
This is fucking good. Brilliant! Hylophobia is a must play for me and I have also discovered a game named Paranormal Beta 9.2 or something which should be nice to also check out. Keep it up bitches
Try Fatal Frame II on the PS2 or Xbox.
If J-Horror freaks you out, its a safe bet this will too.
Not sure about The Grudge game on the Wii. I hear its predictable as fuck, but I see it in stores at bargain bin prices so it might provide one good scare.
There's a Splinter Cell Chaos Theory mod that slightly alters the textures and replaces most NPCs with monsters called banku
as far as ojira are concerned it's pretty kawaii plus it has a slight smattering of kawamesu but you may not like it if johora isn't your taste~~~~
Penumbra: Black Plague in specific
Pet Horsez 2.
Lone Survivor.
Minecraft
Slender : The Arrival.
Slender the Arrival gave me that big ass scare I was talking about holmes. Minecraft should is scary, so boring that it scares me to death. Lone survivor seems nice but not that intense.
Lone Survivor is a great game, but it never gets really "scary," at most its intensely unsettling.
If you are looking for something slightly unusual, might I recommend Homeworld:Cataclysm?
Did anyone mention S.T.A.L.K.E.R? If not, yeah...S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
If they DID mention it, then pretend I actually mentioned The Suffering. It's pretty dated, but it's still a pretty good game, with a few scares and some really unsettling elements. I think you can actually find free downloads of it here and there, but don't quote me on that.

Voice acting 101.
I actually fininshed suffering a long time ago.
There is this short, free browser game series called Exmortis, basically inspecting this house that's got some really disturbing stuff going on in it. The second game ups the ante and 3rd is the catharsis game.

The first Fatal Frame can be emulated properly with a decent PC using pcsx2.
It's tense as hell later on, worth a shot
If you're looking for some good actually horrifying games, you should go asian.
Try Siren blood curse or any game from the Fatal frame series.
Silent hill 1-3 are also worthy of picking up.

Dear Esther made me really tense, great atmosphere.
I second Clock Tower (mainly the PS1 version) and Hotel 626. Obscure can be pretty intense sometimes, too.
Cryostasis: Sleep of reason.
Not the most horrific, but it had some good kicks. Worth of trying.

Ah man, I completely forgot about Cryostasis. That game was awesome in its ability to strike and maintain its tone of creeping entropy. You play a sort of the last warm thing in a frozen world. The combat is a bit clunky but I always felt that fit with the setting. Its difficult to maintain fine motor controls when you are constantly almost freezing to death.
The enemies were really imaginative and some were quite honestly disturbing. I remember I got about halfway through that game before I finally took a close look at one of the enemies. Its glowing face was always kind of interesting and allowed you to know when and where he was coming from, but when I finally went up to look at it I found that its face was an empty room, nicely furnished. I just kind of paused and looked into it for a while, trying to stretch for some kind of meaning. The game always seemed like it was hinting at something without ever really taking me out of the experience to explain it. There is something about these Eastern European developers that allows them to really tap into a sense of subtlety and ambiguity. Its quite refreshing.
Not a perfect game by any means, but more than worth a play through.
