Porco Rosso is an excellent movie. One of the less kiddy ones.

I doubt it's less childish than Princess Mononoke, which was quite childish.
Also the plot summary already sounds too clichè. And the part that isn't exactly clichè is rather childish (him being a pig).
But eh, reading this review I guess I'll have to give it a try, sometime, far far away in the future.
Porco Rosso, in my mind it is one of Miyazaki's finest works. It doesn't contain many of the many annoying story points that plague much of his other work.
Story: The Red Pig, or The Scarlet Pig, whichever sub you choose. I found the story quite entertaining, deep on alot of levels. If you want it to be a kid's story, then it's a kid's story that you don't have to think twice about. But if you really look at it, during WWII and the alliances and what exactly Porco Rosso is doing then you really add another layer to this animation. I found the love story in this also quite endearing, when it comes to alot of Miyazaki's work the romance never really goes anywhere and is quite childish. The romance in this is also slightly childish but it really works. The story never seems forced and goes at quite a nice pace as well.
Art: Ghibli....They really are my bane when it comes to animation. I find their art very ugly, their reuse of characters makes them terrible in my book. Many of their people look exactly the same in every movie and they don't make a conscious effort to improve their craft. You will never however, see another Porco, and his design I quite enjoyed. The rest of the characters dont' stick in my mind at all.
Sound: Old. The sound effects and music used are quite dated, but the movie itself is dated so it altogether works out quite nicely. Some of the sound effects made me laugh, they're incredibly old, but again, they really work for the mood of the film.
Character: Nothing incredibly outstanding. The subtle charm of these characters is something you really have to see. They seem shallow, and some of them are, but there is a level deeper to them, and this, to me, is Miyazaki's greatest achievement with this film. The movie doesn't really allow for a lot of evolution with the characters, but the way their history is revealed is quite cute.
Enjoyment: I love this movie. There were a few boring parts here and there, but all in all the movie is amazing. This definitely has the magic that people who rave about Miyazaki keep raving about. It's here, and if he wasn't directing this film it would have turned out terribly, if you've never seen a Miyazaki film before, or love him without knowing why you do, definitely watch this film, because most likely you'll find out.
His viewpoints seems to be quite similar to mine. Character design, childish romance, annoying story points, re-used character designs. You know, all of it.
dgg you just can't seem to be able to enjoy them, you're too critical of everything nowadays.

Hey sorry for wanting to job in the media industry and be able to create and help people create quality products instead of poorly made crap that they pass through because "It works I guess" or "They probably won't notice anyway, lol".
It's also 100% completely impossible for me to sit down (lay down, stay up, or any other possible watching position) and watch a movie and NOT analyze it, look at details and see flaws in the story, speech, acting, voice, everything. It's what I do, it's what I should do, it's not always what I want, but usually it is.
I have also said time and again that I get bored of a joke, a repetional pattern, plot twists or anything after I have seen it 3-4 times, after that it's a clichè to me. That's just how I am. After that a clichè needs to be parodied to work, and it needs to be an actual parody not just a "We need this clichè to make the story/plot to work, but we know it's a clichè... What to do? OH YEAH, let's make it a parody/notify the people of it being silly".
Or it just needs to be done in a more unique and good way. Like how Kimi ni Todoke managed to be really good for the first half of it even though it was nothing but a big giant clichè gore fest, without even parodying it.
maybe you should take a break from watching anime
maybe you should take a break from watching anime
Given that I spend 1-2 months on finishing a show that isn't airing I would say I already am.
And this isn't just anime. This is everything in media. Posters, movies, TV shows, art, short films. Everything. The only thing that escapes most of it is youtube clips. Because it's youtube.
I'm tired of cliché things as well.
Friend becomes foe - friend joins the evil guy, evil guy joins good guy, good guy always defeats bad guy etc, movie making studios really do need find some better material.

It's really one of the major reasons why I like Slice of Life shows so much.
When they don't have a plot or story I don't have to worry about it being failtastic.
Then it's really just up to the quality of the jokes, what subjects they are talking about and such. Basically sitcoms.
Sucks to be you.
In one way yes, in another way no.
Musashi's a p. good read. Fucking Matahachi though, [sp]being seduced by Oko and leaving with her and Akemi.[/sp]

I think it's a parody of the opening of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
