There's a species of jellyfish that can do this and live forever if they aren't eaten. They detach the old parts after cloning themselves and absorb the new cells.
Here's what makes sense to me. From what I know our brain is responsible for everything we are (Personality, Thoughts, Desires, Emotions, Etc...), well when someone dies (I'm an Atheist), I believe the conscious ceases to exist because the brain has stopped functioning. However; I believe that if you got a brain working again nothing about the person would be different because the way our brain works on an individual basis. Meaning each brain is authentic to that person like a fingerprint.

yes, or in my alternative, you would stunt the growth of it's consciousness (just prevent it from appearing, don't kill it after it's conscious as that's technically murder) and let the original control it's musculature from their own body, which wouldn't be harming anyone, and you could just destroy the clone afterwards, or disregard it's accidental loss.
This = 0 population growth, and no (mind) deaths, bodies don't matter to me.

As i said when I mentioned the machine that hooks nerve cells to your brain and sucks your consciousness into it without there being a gap, onto itself, which contains a mockery of a human brain's cells. But that would probably develop some weird form of consciousness of it's own if the cells were allowed to be active while it's not handling a transfer. And you'd still have to physically transport that machine to preserve people being transferred, so individuals would still die if you tried to teleport them in a shred-and-paste-teleporter.
It would let you upload yourself onto a mechanical body though, giant androids FTW!
