Too bad this is how mostly everyone plays horror games. Not that they're scared, but more of playing it for the scare.
Like Amnesia, over half the people that play it only play it for the scare, and because everyone else has played it. I bet if you asked some kid who's played Amnesia about the plot, they probably couldn't tell you much or anything at all.

The kindest of developers consider such 'casual' playthroughs a valid way to play the game, and cater to those players by placing lots of story elements along the way, but without making game progression dependent on it.
I agree with you though, if I play a game I want to soak in the environment and atmosphere. At every crossroad in a game I fear that one path doesn't allow me to go back and visit the other.
