The thing is, we rely heavily and nearly exclusively on what content hasn't already been seen. New stuff. If you look back at LMAO Pics when it first started out and compared the content then to today, it would paint an abysmal picture. The posts made back then would warrant nothing but dumbs or an abundance of lates. Back then images that had already been seen before were more acceptably late.
We're close to on-par with the speed of most other sites' funny image output, but we have the niche of having our own more-or-less localized memes, too. These things are natural though, and come sparingly. Then of course, this thread burns it to the ground, whatever it may be.
There's also the matter of FP not producing a majority of its own images in this thread.
Hire some people from facepunch to make memes and funny pictures.
