You have a rather twisted perception of the mainstream that's making these things currently popular again, takes it away from the nerds and into real life. For them, these are just some funny faces the recognize from some comics they enjoy, and that enjoyment in them is increased by meeting others who enjoy them equally. Fandom, basically.
You on the other hand are tired of them because you've seen a lot of these comics already, so the novelty has worn off and Sturgeon's law has been very much in effect. And, as much as you don't want it to be true, that doesn't make these people strawman idiots. They're just ordinary people only superficially in touch with internet culture.
That's kind of the definition of mainstream. Not being part of a nerd culture that knows about the background mechanics and for how many years a meme has been around.
