As a player in the "most MMOs" category, I can truthfully say the above is true except for the more hardcore endgame guilds, which at the very least in my experience had you fill out an application and if you were lucky to get in you'd also have to go through a trial period for at least a week, and then you'd get in.

When you had that incident with corporate sleeper spies infiltrating the ranks over months and then gutting out the corporation from the inside out while at the same time stealing a ton of subscription-extension-items in game, I would understand their paranoia.

A rogue player in a WoW guild can't really do that much damage. But in EVE, full on espionage and stealing and whatnot is both possible and encouraged by the devs
