No one really owns any land unless you can defend it. It doesn't matter how long you or your people have lived there, if you can't keep it yours it aint' yours. There is no law of "me and my people have been here since forever so it is our land" in the universe, it is simply a construct that some people accept. The only real universal law regarding who owns what land is of winners and losers. So while I side with the Ukrainians and hope they win, if Russia defeats them then it is Russia's land. Same with all other territorial acquisitions, colonization's, and occupations. When someone steals your pizza, you can say that it was your pizza but in a very real sense it is your pizza no longer. (till you find a way to get it back)
