thank god reinstalling the nightshade uv editor for maya fixed the problem. Although having to use a plugin to bring it up to par with 3ds max's uv editor LIKE COME ON AUTODESK WHY IS MAYA'S DEFAULT EDITOR SO SHHIIIT.

ffs why would they assume anyone who is restarting their pc doesn't mind waiting 30 minutes for an update. if i was done using it i would have shut it down, not restarted it. when i restart a computer i expect to have it ready again quickly to continue what i was doing, not sit on my thumb for half the night
