If you wanted to put an art thread in Fast Threads then DAAS would be the one, posters in that thread don't have to actually make the content themselves

[sp]Had to use a reference image[/sp]
Don't be ashamed of this, everyone uses reference.
I'd actually like to know where this stigma of "reference is bad" came from.

I think it's because people tend to confuse/relate referencing with tracing, plagiarizing or copying. Or because it's "better" or "more normal" if you draw with your imagination
always work with references, and tracing is a great way to practice controlling your lines and understanding forms, Just don't claim the traced work is your 100% totally original thing
also mehhhhh this is a 'post your' thread, FT makes sense. Bring the content and put other FTs to shame and I think this'll start to be a solution rather than a problem
personally I think the less aid you have the more integrity that piece of art has. Not to say that referencing is bad but if someone has drawn something completely from their head, that's when it's really impressive and exciting to me. I generally don't use reference myself because that's what I aspire to (although it's as often the case that I just can't be bothered looking for any reference because I hate doing that)
so yeah I respect any artist who can work solo, if it's entirely from imagination that's the real pure grade stuff to me
in the case of this thread though don't directly reference pictures cuz that's not what we wanna see
also don't trace lol
that's kind of missing the point of references though
like, being able to generate stuff completely from your head is awesome, but the reason people can do that so well is that all of their studying and referencing is burned into them by that point, and they understand how to control that knowledge and incorporate it into their style. I know a lot of professional artists who continue to use references while doing their work, not to mentally trace bits and pieces into their art (which seems to be a stigma), but to use when generating their own unique content. I'd never advise someone avoid referencing because artists they like don't reference
also like I said, it's OK to trace for yourself as a form of practice, it's mostly good for learning to control your linework. Do exercises to try and follow random curves and interesting shapes with as few strokes as possible instead of doing a bunch of feathery 'petting' to scribble along the line. Do it to work on that important muscle memory with forms you might not have come up with while just looking to do little exercises
I find http://www.posemaniacs.com/ a great website to learn about anatomy and poses and stuff, it even has a negative space thing and a 30-second drawing thing.

That's true, if it wasn't for studying reflections in shiny metal objects I wouldn't have been able to make the arms on this robot without a reference

maybe you should've used a reference anyway

Idk, I personality don't care how "impressive" art is in it's making. If I wanted to make impressive art I'd be doing it with my feet or something. I care about what it looks like, the end result
I drew this two years ago

The study part a whole lot more so in my experience, i.e. studying the anatomy of an arm will do you better than directly reffing a tonne of arms. preferably do one after the other, but when someone doesn't study and just relies on reference they're likely to have a lot of shortcomings. If someone is a professional (at least in the more challenging end of the industry) they've definitely put their study in, but when learning I expect a lot of people cling to reference as a crutch. Actually I know professionals who can't draw anything without looking at a reference. To me you're missing a whole part of what makes a great artist if you've not developed any ability to draw from your mind's eye. nothing wrong with what those artists do, but I think everyone should aspire to more. Not for the sake of virtuosity or whatever, just so that they can get the cool shit out of their imagination onto paper on the spot if they want to. surely that's why we all started making art in the first place, you get me
i go to the gym and watch fit people working out to learn how their body looks

Sucks when you do pixel art off a reference though because you realise afterwards that
1) You could have just scaled it down in paint
2) it looks like you just scaled it down in paint.
made a couple more drawings of the girl from my last post
