• Weapons Manufacturers

Quick question. Does the Military buy their weapons or produce it themselves. No doubt a lot of weapons ARE produced by the military, especially top secret weapons. But like small arms ... rifles, pistols, SMG's, rocket launchers etc etc... you get the idea... For example, the AK-47 is produced by a company called Izhmash, who also make cars and motorcycles. In WWII BMW made military vehicles for Germany. So how does weapons manufacturing work? Does the government fund the research and prototyping for new weapons then buys them off the company (using the company just to manufacture it)? Or does the company propose a new weapon to the government, and if they like it they'll buy it. I heard weapons manufacturers profit off war, which doesn't sound suprising. But if they profit off war, it means it's because people need their guns to kill the enemy, so they buy them from the company. But the people firing the weapons are soldiers ... government employees. Hence, the government buys the weapons ... right?
With the M16A2/4 at least the manufacturing rights are held by Colt but then its production is contracted out to FNH.
"For example, the AK-47 is produced by a company called Izhmash" wrong the ak-47 was produced by kalashkinov which was inspired by the MP-40

the army rarely creates or manufactures their weapons even the top secret ones are first made and tested in labs [prototypes] then weapon companies in china etc. create the weapons
Armies can also sell their surpluses to other armies.
Lots of independent manufacturers produce the weaponry. Same with aircraft, much of the issued equipment, etc.
Im pretty sure that the U.S is partners with Israel in weapons
The U.S. Military usually does more "customizing" and "adjusting/configuring" of their weapon setups. Take the M40A1,A2,A3, and A4 for example. They are made by Remington and then shipped off to Quantico, Virginia, to be completed and set up/adjusted to certain requirements by the gunsmiths and marksmanship experts in the U.S. Marine Corps. This is just one example of a process of this type to manufacture several different firearm lineups.

If it is a Browning weapon, FNH makes and sells them; this includes the M2 HB, the FN MAG 58, which replaced the M240B also made by FNH, and the M249. The military typically sets out a requirement for a new weapon and several companies will usually compete for the contract; all weapons having to go through rigorous testing and meet specific qualifications. Also, the government will contract companies for specialty projects, i.e. Raytheon making railguns for a new class of ships for the Navy. The government does however have its own military R&D branch called DARPA or Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; they come up with many odd but effective weapons, some of which never make it to the field. Finally, as stated above, the U.S. Military has its own armorers who refurbish and modify existing weapons in inventory, i.e. the M-14 into the Mk. 14 EBR Mod. 0
As far as I know, no military actually produces or designs their own weapons.
A few weapons are produced by the military. Hardly any, though.
What about explosives?
What about explosives?
Same answer as with weapons. Various companies produce various types of explosive weaponry.
Again, basically the army says "we want something that can do X, build it" and they have people who do. Take the Thermobaric Bomb for example; Army needed something to clear out a cave, quick and easy and they had it created by these guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Research_Laboratory who made the MOAB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOAB)
