No way in hell is mandarin going to become an international language like English.
A fuckton of people may speak it, but think about how many chinese people there really are.
Nobody speaks that language outside China, and if they do, they are a massive minority. And the fact that China is a pretty bad fucking country to be in is propably discouraging many people from even trying to learn the language.
English is spoken and taught pretty much everywhere in the world and it's not even hard to learn.

I thought German was closer to English for the de facto international language than Mandarin. Where's this coming from?
because china's economy is all BAM and POW and SWOOSH so a lot of people think people around the world will be speaking mandarin in no time
Nope. Definitely English. Or at least english over Chinese and German. Only Germans speak German and pretty much all Germans speak English. As for Chinese: The writing system is awful, alien and the words don't sound nice. Only their extremely high population and migration rates are reason to believe that chinese could become a dominant language in the world.
Actually Arabic seems to be very widespread. That could become the dominant language. I mean there are even a few parts of England, where English comes from, that have been dominated by Arabic.
And honestly I think Finnish and Chinese are propably the ugliest languages out there.
And hardest to learn by far. Seriously, I'm finnish and I find finnish really fucking hard.

Languages being taught shouldn't be based on the amount of people that speak it, but rather how many countries consider it their official language.
English, Spanish, French, Arabic. These should be the number one priorities.
I only know of one country that speaks Mandarin, so unless they completely take over the world there's no way in hell I'm going to bother learning it.
Arabic is ugly.
Chinese is ugly
Hindi or whatever Indians speak is ugly.
English, depending on accent and dialect, can be very ugly
Meaning pretty much 70% of the worlds population are talking like shit.
What about Finglish eh? Now that sounds beautiful.
By the way don't move to Finland if any of you are even thinking about it.
Everything is restricted. You can't even buy matches if you're under 18.

english doesnt flow very well, but i've always been if the opinion that arabic is kind of cool. they have an alphabet and it seems to be designed to flow, but nothing will compare to russian. a lot of words in russian have specifically one stresed syllable so that one can speak without pauses.
i still love french :)

Are Russian, Finnish, and Swedish among the 70%?
i think maplestory is fun and another game made in the same genre would do well
I've never seen a better creepypasta than suicidemouse.
I like diet Coke
I think it's stupid when someone cries over something little, then compares it to something not related when trying to argue with you
Aspartame should be illegal
Equality, diversity, and discrimination are all stupid things to fight about and are meaningless without context. Love is really the only important thing. And that would be the Biblical definition of love.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
Aspartame should be illegal
Aspartame is actually harmless.
The only problem is that it breaks down into is Phenylalanine, which should be avoided by people with the genetic disorder Phenylketonuria.
And Phenyalanine is found in breast milk anyways.
Sucralose is a viable alternative, given that it's much sweeter than Aspartame, doesn't lose the sweetness when used in hot food, and has a longer shelf life.
I know this is the unpopular opinions thread, but the fact is, is that most countries and scientists have found aspartame completely safe (unless you happen to have a rare genetic disorder).

Finnish is a very crude and blocky in comparison to many languages in my opinion. While many languages smoothen words in pronounciation (like the word Sphere), sometimes in slightly different ways depending on word, in Finnish pretty much every letter in a word is pronounced the way it is written, always. No smoothening the words except for very few exceptions (-ng- sound, as in mangled)
I find it much easier to think in English than in Finnish too, I'd love to be able to speak English but my tongue is hardwired to knot itself if it isn't speaking Finnish.
The second I saw the Dispicable Me Minions I knew they'd be extremly forced and not funny at all, and I was completely right.
I Cringe every time I hear someone older than 12 mention them.

It's from a kids movie. what do you expect?
I don't even get why the minions were even a thing at all, I remember watching the first movie and they didn't do a fucking thing other than a few gags, the movie would be exactly the same without them
Everyone I know who's seen the films is obsessed with the minions. My buddy up at Ohio State said that on move-in day, they put little minions with everyone's names on them on the dorm room doors. It's a fad.

Cantonese is prettier than mandarin, and do you even speak those languages, I did find for german I thought it sounded kind of ugly at first but as I was learning it I stopped thinking so, it's mainly just the r sound that makes people think that.
I find most "urban cultures" boring and full of people with problems of lack of identity, depression and a a highly zealous hive mind, where everyone feels the need to distinguish themselves and want to live on the edge but they keep following another set of rules that they fear to break, due to the opprobrium of the group.
Yes, I'm talking about metalheads, punks, hipsters, goth kids and people who define themselves by those standards without moving an inch when shown reasonable alternatives to behavior X or Z.
And I know how most people into those groups will disagree with me but one look at, for instance goth/emo discussions on the internet you will most likely stumble upon themes such as "Atheism induced by song lyrics", "Misdirected anger towards society and "normal" people", discussions about depression, anxiety, etc etc...
I have nothing against people who meddle into those groups or that they genuinely go to those related events so I'm not making a generalization here. It's just how a bunch of rotten apples can spoil the bunch that pisses me off.
I thought Aspartame is a confirmed carcinogen?
Nope.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame
A 2007 medical review on the subject concluded that "the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener".[7] However, because its breakdown products include phenylalanine, aspartame must be avoided by people with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU).
