If someone is being coerced into wearing the Burka, what is the likelihood that they will admit to it? How can someone who completely covers up call that having an 'identity'? It's not a religious requirement and is even banned in some majority Muslim countries. And it's okay to dictate that for the same reason that you're not allowed to wear a balaclava or a motorcycle helmet whilst walking around
I'm afraid you'd have to prove your first point. The second point can be answered by saying that you and I likely have no clothes with cultural value to us, at least not in terms of everyday dress, because our cultures are widespread and thus homogenised to the point where they can be worn by anyone. Burkas are not like this, and they have a history within the muslim and middle eastern cultures that women may wish to honour. It's okay to say you can't wear a balaclava or motorcycle helmet because the former is usually used with specific intent to disguise one's identity largely for criminal reasons and the latter is a specialised piece of headgear that has no place on the streets unless you are actually on a motorbike. Burkas have no specialised role (at least not in any practical sense) and they aren't specifically designed for identity obscuration.
people whose opinions differ from my own are still human beings who are worthy of respect
Atlas Shrugged is very poorly written and yet has been widely read, there must be some sort of genius in her somewhere :v:
But 50 shades of Grey and Twilight are popular.
I think East Prussia should be returned to Germany. [editline]19th April 2013[/editline] Or, as known by the Russians, 'Kaliningrad'
I disagree with the Berka, I think that a lot of women are pressured into wearing it in order to be a "good" Muslim, and it's sexist considering it turns them into an object that the man owns. I think France was right to ban it, despite my RE teacher treating it like it was blatant racism that they did to hurt the Muslims feelings. Way to get your own views on a bunch of teenagers miss, good job there, we should let Muslim women be oppressed because we might hurt the men's feeeeeelings.
Are you talking about burqas or any covering? If you talk to Muslim women many chose to wear them, there is a woman in the religious tolerance group I post in that always has to deal people who are wrongly assuming she is oppressed because she wears a hijab. When in reality it is her own choice. Here is a section of one of her posts...
I had one customer come in...he looked around for a while...then eventually he asked me "Do you believe in God?" I said yes; he said "Do you believe in Jesus?" I told him I believe Jesus (pbuh) was a Prophet of God. He then went on and on about how Jesus is God, and quoting Biblical verses. Then, he was going on about how his dad is a pastor, and he's gonna be one also, and how he was sent by God to convert Muslims to Christianity. LMBO!!!! I couldn't help it, I laughed when he said that...I told him "no offense, but I was raised Christian and left Christianity to be Muslim, and I'm not going back." Then, later in the evening, it was close to closing...this lady comes in...very pleasant....so I ring her up, and as she's leaving, she stops and says "Sorry, I wish you didn't have to wear the burqa." LOL!!!! What?! I didn't correct her that it's a hijab, not a burqa...most don't know the difference. BUT, I did say "I'm not, I like it, I chose to wear it." And she was like "you did?!" I said "Yes, I converted to Islam 4 years ago, and I chose to cover." She said "Well, I wish I could see your hair. I bet it's really pretty." haha.

But 50 shades of Grey and Twilight are popular.
Terrible books that sold ridiculously well, genius!
Terrible books that sold ridiculously well, genius!
Her genius was in exploiting the bloc of people who vote for Ron Paul.
Sonic Labyrinth got an unfair rap because "U CANT GO FAST". That wasn't the point. It was a decent game.
Sonic Labyrinth got an unfair rap because "U CANT GO FAST". That wasn't the point.
I prefer 3d sonic over 2d sonic.
The muslim culture will destroy us if we don't keep it where it belongs in a desert. Although there might be one or two redeming factors about gypsies , if it were up to me they'd all fuck off back to where they came from. Multi-culturalism can fuck right off. true feminism needs to be rebranded as humanism. psy is over-rated. i got more but i cant remember right now.
I think East Prussia should be returned to Germany. [editline]19th April 2013[/editline] Or, as known by the Russians, 'Kaliningrad'
Its ethnically russian now, the floods of westward refugees in 1945 saw to that.
I thought Dishonored was boring and kinda dull. I think most people that don't dare to voice their opinions are terrible.
Half Life 2 barely has a story for 60% of the game, its just running around hitting stuff And it did not age well at all, crappy AI, Orange Box patch, low-res textures, etc. [editline]19th April 2013[/editline] Episode Two on the other hand actually had a good story Edit: Katamari should explain that disagree
There should be more to a game than just great or even amazing gameplay for it to be great.
Cry of Fear isn't scary, there are some unsettling moments but mostly it's some monster startling the shit out of you with rampant screaming. I guess I shouldn't forget to mention that the standalone release of CoF is due 24th of April.
Both Capitalism and Socialism have serious flaws but both can be applied to work successfully if given the right environment.
Define successfully
Both Capitalism and Socialism have serious flaws but both can be applied to work successfully if given the right environment.
Humans just aren't made for socialism. This goes way back. The only way it'd work is with a lot of brainwashing.
We haven't found the ideal political philosophy, and we never will.

most of facepunch is on the higher section of the bell curve when it comes to intelligence. [sp]see what i did there?[/sp]
I could go my whole life not watching Star Wars again. It never really captivated me, at all.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
Scandinavia begs to disagree.
Scandanavia is not socialist. Economically it is one if the most unrestricted places to do business, however socially they put a lot of money into education and healthcare etc. and actually spend the same if not less as a % of GDP than France or even the UK.

I'm of course not advocating pure socialism, just as I'm sure that no one is advocating pure liberalism. [editline]20th April 2013[/editline] Ok, I did some research, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending#As_a_percentage_of_GDP France does spend as a % of their GDP than all scandinavian countries, if only very closely, the UK limps quite a bit behind though. The tax burden of all sweden and denmark is higher than france's though. It's interesting to note however that this puts france extremely high on the list, being surpassed in government spending only by cuba, iceland, some african countries like zimbabwe, and kribati (which tops the chart with 114.6%.
Humans just aren't made for socialism. This goes way back. The only way it'd work is with a lot of brainwashing.
A lot of countries have regulated capitalism with social interventions from the governement, a mix between socialism and capitalism is pretty good. It works far better than any extreme form.
Scandinavia's a social democracy, not democratic socialist.
Fallout 3 bored me to tears.
I think S.T.A.L.K.E.R CoP is better than SHoC.
I've tried, but I cannot get into Lovecraft. His writing style is boring.
