Because Bill Waterson didn't feel like making more? I think it's a nice ending that does justice to the whole comic.
I don't like endings such as that. Kind of like The Giver. It's open, and it's sad because of that. It shows something more than any other opening strip would. You know it has importance to something, but what, is unknown. It's mysterious and strange, but satisfying, to an extent.
