Yeah the image is small, but if you ever played Magic Carpet 2, you know what I'm talking about
The Sentinels only attack you if you attack them, and they do a lot of damage. First time you meet them, it's in a cave and they appear out of nowhere with the narrator telling you to "get out of here quickly". So like any normal human, you panic and start attacking that giant stone frowning face and it kills you in 2 hits.
You can kill them, but only with high-level spells and if you back up after every strike you do, otherwise you die.

All the HL2 zombies are terrifying, the sound design is just creepy but when you realise what they are screaming it just goes downhill from there
Valve put a lot of time into making the sound design really fucked up, like reversed slowed down clips of people screaming for help
:suicide:
These two, especially the spider like one scared the shit out of me when I first played doom 3 when I was little

The ones you find in the coastal houses.
God damn the coast is the best part of HL2, so long and relaxing and houses to explore.
I didnt know people were genuinely scared of HL2 zombies and ravenholm :v:

Cry of Fear is probably one of the scariest games Ive played in my life, everything in that game is just disturbing... combined with terrifying soundtrack, monsters, and outdated engine and graphics certainly gives the game an evil feel when playing
Any bastard you prefer from The Suffering and Sequel

The reverts from singularity.
They're essentially clickers, but there are usually a lot of them around, and in the first encounter with them, you have to quietly sneak past.
While sneaking about, you have to crouch walk within a few inches of one, and just as you do it goes HRUUGUU in this really screechy voice and points its head right at you, scared the shit out of me.

In similar horrors; they weren't the scariest but they made me jump a few times.

Spike and Barley made me not afraid of Mr. Struts and the Anti-Struts.
Are you guys actually scared of these things though? From what I've played, Amnesia is the only game I'd say is actually scary, and even then it's not scary to a point where it's unplayable.
Most of the monsters in this thread are from games where you have more than enough firepower to annihilate the creatures too.
The one that stands out for me the most is System Shock 2. Why does everyone say that game is scary? I played it really recently and most of my playtime was alone at night and the game was never even slightly unnerving or anything for a second. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely loved the game: but scary? Not in the slightest.

Most people probably played it when they were much younger.

Scary is somewhat synonymous with unsettling and startling, and that's what a lot of these are.
