Are you guys actually scared of these things though? From what I've played, Amnesia is the only game I'd say is actually scary, and even then it's not scary to a point where it's unplayable.
Most of the monsters in this thread are from games where you have more than enough firepower to annihilate the creatures too.
The one that stands out for me the most is System Shock 2. Why does everyone say that game is scary? I played it really recently and most of my playtime was alone at night and the game was never even slightly unnerving or anything for a second. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely loved the game: but scary? Not in the slightest.
SS2 is more just being fucked up, tense, and weird, than it is scary.

I tell you fucking why, the truth is that game over screen is the entire reason why

If you were six you would know how it feels to get an fucking ugly looking alien jump at you when you die.

play Cry of Fear
you'll find another game you think is scary
this game literally sat in my game folder for about a year. Just 2 weeks ago I actually got the balls to play it. It's a real fun/scary game that is probably one of my favorites.

How wasn't this scary to you.

Usually the Patriarch isn't that scary but this guy really gets to me when he de-cloaks right in front of your face and takes you out in one hit with his weird chest growth thing. I jump out of my skin every time.
The Patriarch never really got me creeped out; at most it was a "Oh man here comes the boss" feeling. It probably helped that Patty's very clearly a stereotypical nerd under all those modifications, and has lines to match when he speaks.
The Sirens, on the other hand, always freaked me out. And when I heard their lines clearly enough to figure out that[sp]they've got the personalities of little old ladies, are completely blind, and have no idea what's going on or that their voice can harm others[/sp], it just got worse.
Slaughterfish in Oblivion were scarier

Zombies in HOTD made me scared.
I was 7 at that time.
Am I the only one that didn't find cry of fear that scary? it's just filled with jumpscares, not to mention the creator is a complete fucking self-righteous tool but that's beside the point.
Afraid of monsters on the other hand was amazing it just had such great atmosphere.

They're not very scary when you fight them head on, but when I was on low hp and there was 3 splicers chasing me, I spammed Insect Swarm until they were all dead. I felt relieved then I heard this guy behind me, getting attacked by the bees.
Man, fuck the bees and fuck this guy.

I have played it. It's a real good game and it did have me tense for a good bit of the game, but I wouldn't rank it as scary as Amnesia personally. Probably because you can just kill all of the monsters (except Sawrunner who was real good for adrenaline but not that hard to escape from.)
I think Amnesia's winning factor is the fact you can't fight back and even outrunning the monsters can be hard. Admittedly there is very little penalty for death in Amnesia however, usually it just respawns you with the same progress only the monster is now gone. Justine was good for this as you really couldn't afford to die. I hear A Machine for Pigs will bring in more penalty for dying.
amnesia was scary through the campaign, but after playing 30 hours worth of custom stories it really dies down at some point. what really changed this for me was that after countless of hours i finally realized that there is a specific music which starts playing once a monster spawns. it became a second nature to hide immediately as it begun to play. after that, it didn't scare me anymore. what really had me scared when playing was the uncertainty of a monster being nearby or not.

Yeah, when you work out how a monster works a lot of the suspense dies down. I can't say I've played many of the Amnesia custom campaigns. I tried one that was supposedly one of the best and after getting quite far in it I fell out of the map and the game hadn't saved so I gave up.
You've cleared the area of every last twitcher. You and your friends are just about out of ammo. You finally reach the door when suddenly everything turns black and white. And this starts playing:

And this guy comes around the corner and guns down one of your compatriots:

[sp]I think it's rather brilliant that they'd have Simon as one of the monsters in coop, as well as singleplayer. I've always felt that Simon is the real monster in Cry of Fear. It might not seem like it in his reality or the player's perspective, but the fact is that he's an unstable and dangerous person. Even though they've sprinkled plot points around about Simon being suicidal and going through treatment, I feel this is most apparent towards the end of the game after you've defeated the Doctor in the attic. I remember stepping out of the attic to notice that everything was completely quiet, save for some birds chirping, which felt extremely out of place compared to the rest of the game. I walked towards one of the windows and noticed that the sky, instead of being pitch-black, was a nice and easy morning blue. I knew there had to be a catch somewhere, that monsters would pop up around the corner and kick me in the dick, but no. As far as I can remember, nothing showed up inside the asylum or out in the forest at that point.
It was then that I had a huge realization.
The only horrible monster for miles around was the battered and bleeding Simon, toting guns and hauling morphine, in the middle of a tranquil morning forest.
For the whole game, the regular Simon had been juxtaposed against the abnormal hostile environment, but at that point, they had switched places.
And then you fell into that basement and it was back to monsters again.[/sp]
