Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo are rated 33 and 34 on Rolling Stones' best guitarists of all time. They experiment with many different tunings and effects, and incorporate feedback into their style. Vocals are done by Moore, Ranaldo, and Kim Gordon. Mark Ibold, former bassist with Pavement now plays with Sonic Youth also. They have over 25 albums, many released on their on Sonic Youth Recordings (SYR) album, because they were too experimental to release on their label. Jim O'Rourke is also pictured in the shot of Steve Shelley, and collaborates with SY a lot.
I highly recommend this band, they're phenomenal.

He has contribute to a ridiculous amount of bands including being frontman of Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Pan.Thy.Monium and various others. At other points he has been a member of such bands as Katatonia and Bloodbath, and contributor to Diabolical Masquerade. He as also released his own solo album where he does every single instrument.
He is basically Rush if they played Death Metal.
