The V-22 Osprey is actually considered a tilt-rotor craft. If any of you are familiar with flight regulations, there were previously two classifications of aircraft: rotary-wing (helicopters) and fixed-wing (airplanes). The Osprey is now a hybrid of the two. VSTOL (vertical short take off and landing) aircraft of old, such as the AV-8B Harrier jump jet and the upcoming JSF-35 are still classified as fixed-wing, and so the Osprey is quite the pioneer. They stick to the expression VSTOL as opposed to VTOL because none of our jets can quite take off directly vertical; they require to roll some distance down the runway first. They could take off vertically theoretically, but the weight for all the fuel needed to burn for upward thrust is just too much on top of the deadweight of the aircraft.
nice , thanks for clearing that up...
