Are there any legitimately depressing games that you've played?

Rising storm, nothing quite like being pinned down by mortars and watching your squad get mowed down and blown to bits, hearing the survivors scream for their mothers while this is playing in the background.

And if we include Visual novels, Katawa shoujo.
Red Dead Redemption
Those that have completed it will know why, aside from that though. The game had this really well crafted atmosphere which was pretty depressing.
Mafia 2
Same for this, if you have completed it.

oh man, the screams in the RO2 games are seriously sad
In the first Bioshock, when [sp]you find out Andrew Ryan is your dad and he commands you to beat him to death with a golf club[/sp] brought me to tears.
Also the ending of Half Life 2 Ep2. Felt like all the struggle was gonna lead to a cathartic high point but the incredibly bleak music over the credits after [sp]Eli dies in front of you & Alyx[/sp] was quite morbid.
Does Sonic 06 count?
The endings of Shadow Warrior (2013) and Wolfenstein: TNO are the closest things to depressing i can think of, they hit pretty hard.
Gears of War 2
[sp]When Dom has to kill his wife[/sp]
I mean, I didn't lose my shit, but it hit me pretty damn hard
Spec Ops: The Line.
It makes you feel horrible for your choices
Obligatory The Last of Us (who would have thought) but the first 15 minutes of the game hit you with sadness right off the bat.
Also, Gears of War was a heavy game on the soul. MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR GoW 3: [sp]When Dom died. Holy fuck. Gears of War was my first real violent video game that I was introduced to when it came out (way back in 2006) and I had a deep love for the games. After years of playing them, when they hit you with Dom's death. Damn. I genuinely started crying like a little bitch.[/sp]

If you do play this, you literally have ONE CHANCE to do it or you have to delete your cookies.

It was really good, although the whole one chance thing was gimmicky as hell imo since it is possible to reset it, just a bit more tedious.
The game was great. I looked up all the endings and for some reason read the YouTube comments and of course somebody said "How you can have one day left to live and not rape your daughter is beyond me."
Jesus Christ internet. Never fail to surprise me.
Cry of Fear is pretty depressing
Far Cry 2 was really depressing and left my angry by the end. In a strange way though it felt eerily like the intended feelings. I was tired, pissed, and unquestioning. I just did missions and killed people to get diamonds and keep moving forward to get the hell out. I was sick, tired, amoral and all of my real buddies were dead.
Kind of like a world-weary mercenary in a morally gray living hell should feel like.

It sounds stupid from the game title, but the whole game is depressing as fuck. Hell, in the first 5 minutes of the game you try killing yourself.
There's some pretty crazy characters and events with a supernatural vibe throughout it, the whole game is a trip. Most interesting game I've played all year.
I finished Prey but can't remember what happens
Why was it sad?
Oh boy where to begin
[sp]Your grandfather dies impaled, drained and turned into organic fuel in front of you, dead kids everywhere, a young girl murders her own brother after she gets possessed by spirits which are heavily implied you brought with you, an entire portion is getting reaped and turned into organic fuel as you play, some unlucky fuckers are turned into naked, half-mechanical slaves, you kill your own girlfriend after she's spliced with a giant alien creature, you almost become the bad guy and learn that the previous bad guy was just like you, a desperate person trying to escape and who got chosen for her tenacity to take the lead of the giant alien ship you're in. Everything is made of dead bodies, basically.[/sp]
Also I forgot in my previous list, Penumbra Black Plague hit pretty hard. Not sure if it counts, but the trailer for dead island is also depressing as fuck, shame the actual game isn't anywhere as good.
Valkyria Chronicles when [sp]your adopted sister gets pegged with a sniper round and as she slowly dies, she is sung to by the one person on your team who hated her for her race, but became friends throughout the story; well, that is, before the aforementioned getting shot.[/sp]
Worse part is it just fucking happens. That's war for you.
left for dead 2.
Three guys trapped in an apocalyptic nightmare, and the the only piece of ass available is Rochelle.
I'd just give up or turn gay.
GTA IV near the middle

You think that's harsh, in I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream there's only one woman left on earth for four guys, and the only one who's got a big enough dick to satisfy her also happens to look like a disfigured ape.
I'm not making any of this shit up by the way, that's basically how it's described in the book :v:
not exactly depressing, but thomas was alone had some dialogue that really made you think, and realize just how bleak things can get

A gay disfigured ape.
Nier
underrated as hell game that has multiple endings each more depressing then the last
The Walking Dead (season one) is one of the most tragic stories I've ever experienced. Can't really explain too much about that one 'cause I want to avoid spoilers, just take my word for it I guess.
And even though I never finished it I found Majora's Mask really depressing, especially compared to the other Zelda games that make you feel like a hero, in Majora's Mask you're kind of like an unappreciated guardian angel torturing himself trying to save everybody. There's also just something really eery about knowing that everybody's going to die/going back in time and re experiencing the same events without anybody knowing what's going on. The soundtrack is also amazing and perfectly fits the tone of it all. I really need to get back to this game.

For some reason the final hours song from Majora's Mask reminds me of my father's death. It still makes me tear up a little.
It's hardly a game, but Depression Quest really lives up to its name. Depression Quest, The Walking Dead (Season 1) and Mother 3 are the only games to make me physically cry.
I'd also mention Shadow of the Colossus and Spec Ops: The Line, but I didn't find them depressing so much as emotionally exhausting.

What about the witches?
The Company of Myself is pretty sad
Far Cry 3 [sp] Whole story felt like a play on emotions, a man who has to learn fast or die fast, falling prey to the underlying insanity lurking with everyone character. The end showed that even though the chick was going to kill Jason, she stopped Dennis from killing him.[/sp]
GTA IV. I loved it.
RO2, those, screams, I dream about it sometimes.
FarCry 3. The bad ending.
Metro 2033.
You feel so helpless, sitting there watching what is left of humanity destroy itself over some bullshit ideologies.
Like, everyone's lives are shit and people are barely surviving in the metro and then the commies and fascists start killing each other and fucking jesus its depressing.
Last Light was much more hopeful though, which in some ways it was relieving.
Fallout 3 is depressing. I know Bethesda's writing is shit but at the very end when it shows that picture of you and dad it always makes me sad. It doesn't help that Fallout 3 is the closest we will get to a video game adaptation of The Road.
Defcon
The Last Of Us
Heavy Rain (got the bad ending)
Metro: Last Light (bad ending too :v:)
Spec Ops: The Line
Hotline Miami
LIMBO
