Russian is pretty hard to learn. I can help you a little if you want.
i'd go for a romance language if you have any intention of studying multiple languages. i grew up learning basic french and recently decided to study italian. my prior knowledge of french helped a lot in understanding some concepts they're also easier to learn because they use the same alphabet and have a lot of the same root words as english
Probably because it's hard, and I've also heard the japanese are not too fond of foreigners.
it isn't that hard once you can read all the hiragana/katakana
I speak bits of Italian and Russian, and the hardest part, in my opinion, is retention. I recommend, once you learn basic grammar, pronounciation, word structure and such, start watching movies or playing games with voices in whatever language you're learning with English subtitles. It helps to boost your vocab and also stops you forgetting words over time.
Wow I went to sleep thinking this thread would die over night but I was wrong, thanks for all the responses! I might go for chinese first and learn another one in a few years. It's actually part of my "things to achieve in life" list to learn as many languages as possible. Also I've heard somewhere that japanese uses some of the chinese words but I don't know if that's true. So that might help if I might want to learn it a few years later. Going for the romance languages first is also a good idea I might consider that one too. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I tried learning Chinese and the whole letters-for-words thing is fucking annoying. I totally recommend you try it though, most Asian languages borrow from Chinese and they'll all be a lot easier to learn if you already know Chinese.
Dont ever go for french,Its a pain in the ass ! As its my native language I can honestly say I hate it. For my third language Id love to speak Mandarin seeing how usefull itll become in the future.
Lithuanian. You will shit yourself how difficult it is. It's same as Japanese on difficulty.
I suggest learning a language that's not very different from your own. For instance, I learned basic Spanish as a native English speaker (but German would probably be even better). Choose one that has a similar alphabet and pronunciation. Once you have a better understanding a language like that, you can more easily learn languages which are similar to those, but not to your native. For instance, from Spanish I easily able to pick up a bit of German, and even Russian. Even though it has a completely different alphabet and some different pronunciation, I was able to apply what I knew about Spanish grammar and pronunciation, which wasn't all that different. Stepping stones, man, stepping stones.
If you know a bunch of latin alphabet languages, try a new alphabet (like Russian or Japanese) But I wouldn't recommend Japanese to anyone who isn't fluent in at least 4 other languages. Currently in the process of learning it and it's insanely hard.
I overheard once in china some guy talking about how easy japanese is to learn, I guess that if you know mandarin, you should get along with japanese easily.
I think I'll go for chinese. Thanks for all the suggestions.
A penpal might interest you. I've got one who helps 'refresh' German with me, and I help with English.

All I found after a quick google search is a place with horny and desperate people all over the world. I don't want to pen and paper sex I just want to learn the language :suicide:

I used to know Japanese but when I started reading Arabic (I can read but not speak nor understand) I start getting confused between the words. Chinese is easy, but reading it is hard. Well for me of course, I gave up trying to lean Chinese after a few days of trying.
i know spoken mandarin, because my parents are chinese. But since I was born in europe and lived here for most of my life, i don't know that much. And I wouldn't mind some help with german lol, but I can't write that much so nevermind..
