It's more a trust issue, veterans have been part of this community for so long that we can safely say they know what facepunchers new to anime, that check the OP for recommendations, should see as "gems". I'd rather recommend Kanon to a new guy than your generic fanservice show
But this is just what you would like to see if you were to be recommended something if you were new to anime.
Clearly the massive amount of new users that prefer moe shows and fanservice more greatly represents what people generally look for when they want to watch anime.
The flaw in the argument is that you think elitist quality whores at the age of 20-30 is the main demographic that visits the thread, but I'm pretty sure it's young teenagers at 13-18 years that just wants something different than their standard TV shows, and boobs, lots of fucking boobs.
It's good at what it's good at. It's bad at what it's bad at.
It's good at showing panties. It's bad at being a good show.

Wow, are you Sherlock Holmes?
STOP ENJOYING THINGS
I'm getting pretty tired of hearing you guys repeat this over and over and over.
I'm stating my opinion, I'm not saying people can't enjoy what they want to enjoy. Why would I allow shows I dislike or hate to get into the OP or have a fanservice category (which now got cut out for lack of votes, not my affection with it) if I didn't want people to enjoy what they like?
It's not like I don't like shows that focuses on cute things either. I just really hate how much some of you talk about it and in certain periods floods tons of images to accompany your masturbation over cute things.
~Opinions~
That's part of it. But I'm mainly talking about shows that are mainly deemed as shit, shows that have been seen by many and hated by most.
I'm not saying you can't enjoy such shows, because we all appreciate different things, we also develope different taste over the years, just because they like it now doesn't mean they like it the next year because they've seen a lot objectionally better things and can see the flaws and poor job in the show.
To take me as an example I thought Elfen Lied was awesome in every aspect the first time I watched it, it was also the second show I ever watched. I loved the maturity of the show, the blood, the animation and style, everything was just excellent.
Next year I re-watch Elfen Lied as what I planned for being an anniversary thing. Well, this time I noticed how retarded a lot of the animation was and how it really wasn't all that mature. I was still emotionally connected with it and still cried at parts of it, but it had been severly tainted because I had seen so many other shows that did things better. If I'd kept watching Elfen Lied every year I would probably not think it was very good at all, currently it's listed as a 9/10 which I really don't believe is right, I just don't know what it would be if I watched it again.
Correction: you can get banned for things you should have been able to be banned for in the first place.
Getting banned for using the forum for the reason forums exists should not be a bannable offense.
Do you have to generalize everything?
It's the truth, and yes stereotyping and generalizing things is what I love most of all, that's why you need to realize that I really am not as serious as I may seem.
Especially the way so many of you don't think I actually respect opinions when it's really the exact opposite. In fact you guys get your panties in a bunch because my opinion goes against yours.
Stop thinking I say things as facts and not opinions, unless I use the word "objective" then I'm just talking from my own opinion, my own thoughts and reasonings.
Get over it.

Tons of arguments is what I've noticed in the past few days I've visited this thread during.
Which is good.
Arguments > mindless blabber that nobody can reply to or care about at all. (I'm not implying that people necessarily care about arguments)
I agree with Orkel. Why don't we have up to six shows per category: up to 3 gems, and 3 user chosen
this means that we get the new people's terrible shows, but they're under the shows that really stand out in each genre, so it's a win-win
We have an infinite number of shows per category. 3 user chosen and every other vote that made it past 1 vote.
I don't see how this would change anything other than having the "gems" be more elitistly chosen, you also make it sound like us veterans have superior taste that is also the exact same taste, as if we don't think different shows are gems.
Pretty elitist.
by compiling a list of the best and narrowing it down to 3 for each cat
[editline]5th December 2012[/editline]
essentially it's still user chosen, but it's user chosen best of the best
meaning no shit shows
That's what we're already doing...
FA veterans who know their shit gather together and discuss. People like dgg, lektro, chunky, me, taggart and die_hard, you, maybe forgot someone but you get the idea.
Wow, that's dumb and elitist.
So you're saying those are the only people that knows what's good and nobody else owns taste or knows what a good show, and that every show we like is objectively good?
Don't make me laugh.
except that it does, because it means we don't have good shows get replaced by absolute shit
That's for the majority to decide whether or not something is good or not.
Because, you know, the most reliable way to know if something is absolute shit or absolute gold is to see what the majority thinks.
For example I don't think The Godfather or The Avengers was all that. Godfather kept my interest for the whole movie, but it never felt like anything of importance ever happened. With Avengers it's just another completely plain hollywood movie that's just like any other hollywood movie.
But, these are massively enjoyed movies across the board that gets praise from the general audience as well as critics, so just because I don't think they are all that, they definitely are all that for the majority, and it's the majority that ultimately tells us if something is good or not.
(same goes for things like One Direction, Justin Bieber and Twilight)
The only difference is now Chunky doesn't charge in and tell people their opinion is shit, starting a boring argument we've been through 50 times already
Same argument I gave to Koenigator about shit shows.
Happens less than it used to
No, dubs were never defended a lot nor well in the past. Most people said that they liked Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop for Crispin Freeman's voice, but that was also it. Now people are trying to defend all sorts of dubs across the board, no matter how terrible.
Happens far less than it used to.
There was a good moment of silence where video players were never brought up, yeah.
but those all happened in 'old' Fast Anime, and this place gets really boring when it devolves into circlejerking. They're usually the periods I bugger off back to /a/.
No, this place is really fun when people have a hissyfit and circlejerking commences.
FA has become more and more like /a/ as the years have gone by though.
Well, if you mean part of internet cancer, sure.
The way the poll is set up at the moment is "lowest common denominator", not "quality". I'm fairly certain that there are a few genres that people watch more than anything else, and will often seek out when looking up new anime to watch. Mine happen to be (in order): "Comedy", "Fantasy", "Action", and "Sci-Fi".
Personally I just watch everything but mecha, good shows are good, bad shows are bad. I'm pretty sure this behaviour is pretty similar across the board.
I do know however that when I started watching anime I went to crunchyroll and just put every show tagged "ecchi" on my to-watch list, so I understand where you're coming from.
If you wanted the poll to be about Quality you would have to restructure how people give their votes, and what they're allowed to vote on. One way to do that would be to limit the amount of genres listings you can vote for.
I don't think that is a good system honestly, everyone has seen a bit of everything, and if they haven't seen much from a category they won't have any votes for it or only 1-2 of them (which happens frequently) which often is the show other people watched and enjoyed for the category as well, making it more than valid as a recommandation.
For example, let's say we used this new method of voting that limits the amount of genres you can vote for. We use the genre listings that are currently in the OP, and you're only allowed to vote in 3 separate categories. However, you can vote for 10 different anime in each one. Each anime you vote for has a weighted score (from 10-1) based on how high you voted it in the list. If you can't think of 10 anime to recommend, then the scores are curved based on how many you submitted.
Sounds like voting just became more of a hassle both for the voters and for me putting it together (it would also be more prone to faults if I misstype a calculation or similar, which is bound to happen).
I understand your intention with this system, but I feel it would just severly limit the amount of votes we got, I'm also pretty sure most people would vote for Action, Drama, Comedy and Romance since they generally contain most peoples favourite shows, and then every other more "niche" category would hardly have any votes or be deleted alltogether.
The downside to this voting method is if there's only a single person voting for a genre, it'll be "like a dictatorship". For example, i'm pretty sure Die_Hard is the only one here who would choose "Mecha" as one of their genre of choice, so their opinion would be law. That's not necessarily a bad thing because Die_Hard is also probably one of the few us of that actually cares that much about mecha in the first place, so he could probably give you some really solid recommendations.
I agree that the vote probably would resonate more clearly with mecha fans if only Die_Hard voted in it and so forth, but it wouldn't necessarily resonate with the general population that watch the OP.
Die_Hard would probably give good votes for mecha fans, but not necessarily (of course, it may very well be) good votes for people that wants to give it a try or haven't watched it before, because they may look for entirely different things in their shows.
should watch it, it's pretty great imo
sigh, it appears "experienced people know better" is now elitism
Uh, yeah, that's pretty close to the very definition of elitism.
[editline]5th December 2012[/editline]
e·lit·ism or é·lit·ism (-ltzm, -l-)
n.
1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
2.
a. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
b. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.
I have problems seeing how your suggestions for the vote is not elitism when you name a specific group of people to have the proper taste to select out supposedly good shows.
