Prime difference being that school makes me read it. I don't watch an anime because I have to, I watch it because I want to. If I genuinely care about the evolution of the medium, I'll try stuff like NGE but that's absolutely no guarantee that I'll finish it because I value my viewing pleasure over stuff like experiencing the evolution of the medium.
Okay, let's take NGE as an example.
Say I start watching it and don't like it. Say I should finish it in order to get the references to it in other anime.
If I don't care about NGE, why on earth would I care about any references?
So you can understand what people mean when they say
"This show is more cryptic than Evangelion"
"Another Rei expy, great."
"I'm more of an Asuka person than a Rei person"
You'll be wondering what character X means when they say "Blood Type Blue." If you are familiar with eva you'll be thinking "Oh, character X is a geek that watches anime."

You'll miss the subtleties that makes stuff like this funny. You don't even have to like Eva for this to hit your funny bone.
The only person in this thread that says that is me, and I guess with this post, you as well?
That's not a lot of people, and I haven't heard of anyone that has that attitude amongst friends and people I've met.
Keep in mind I don't mean they should finish every show they watch if they don't like it, only a few certain ones.

So I won't get jokes and references regarding something I don't care about, that's a relief.
Watching something you don't like for the sole purpose of getting jokes or references is fucking stupid, no matter how you put it.
openingg stil p grat tho, 10/10 god going japan

would bang
I didn't like Kill Me Baby and dropped that. I don't think anyone should put themselves through that.

Best anime 2013, calling it.
Holy fuck shit.
Finally finished watching Love Exposure. 4 hour long movie.
Crazy, perverse, weird movie. I enjoyed it, but holy fuck, sometimes it was just, what.
[editline]8th January 2013[/editline]
Anyone else who has seen it too?
[editline]8th January 2013[/editline]
"The first version was originally six hours long, but was trimmed at the request of the producers. "
Wouldn't mind seeing the 6 hour version.
Watched Sword of the Stranger. It was pretty nice but they really didn't develop the characters enough.

MY DREAM ANIME.
Watched Sword of the Stranger. It was pretty nice but they really didn't develop the characters enough.
The whole movie was average and only served to build up to the last 10 minutes. Which were glorious.
Would you recommend it?
Well, I don't know to be honest.
I personally liked it, but it was quite weird at times, especially close to the ending.
I'd say watch it and decide yourself. You can always stop watching it if it becomes too boring.
Keep in mind I don't mean they should finish every show they watch if they don't like it, only a few certain ones.
Yo, this kinda comes across as "people should watch shows that I like, even if they don't" and I know this isn't what you mean.
There are some anime that are viewed as important or as must watch, I'm talking shit like cowboy bebop and akira, these are things that in a way you are supposed to watch. But back to the things I dropped, It's no coincidence that they are all sort of "must watch" anime, that's the only reason I started two of them. It's just that I don't find them entertaining. If you had the choice to either watch a show you liked, or one that you disliked, I'm pretty certain I know which one you'd choose.
I know that Death note is one of those things that you kinda have to see, but I'm just not that interested, I mean I may watch it at another point, or I may not. In fact if my mate keeps going on at me about it I may have to just to shut him up. I will say that I didn't watch past the first episode, I don't follow this "rule of 3" you guys mention, there are barely any anime that I've watched where I haven't been interested from the first episode in, and when that was the case, it was usually something that someone who's opinion I trust has recommended.
I started watching full metal panic because I liked an amv of it with 99 red balloons sound track, it looked pretty good so I checked it out. After watching 6 or so episodes I decided that it wasn't for me, and again it's not like I'm never going to watch it again, it's just that I have better things to watch.
Now to haruhi suzumiya, I never liked the show, it didn't jump out at me or particularly impress me, in fact I'd even go so far as to say that I wouldn't have started watching it if it wasn't for facepunch's/the internet's love of of it. I found the idea that[sp]the universe was only created two years ago[/sp]very interesting, but I never felt like the show was interesting, or something that I would watch normally. I didn't understand why everyone loved it so much so I watched a few more episodes, I think I gave up after seeing 3 or 4 episodes but I still wasn't enjoying it so I gave it up, simple as.
I see where you're coming from, with that reference stuff you were mentioning earlier, It's nice when you notice a reference to something but I don't think it's worth spending 4+ hours watching a series that I don't like just to get a few jokes or references.

ARE YOU RETARDED?!
You haven't watched Death Note at all, you watched an episode introducing you to the character. The show hasn't at all started and you have no idea if it interests you or not because the story hasn't begun.
The rule of 3 exists for a reason. Because you CAN'T judge a show with only 1 episode, every show has introduction episodes before they actually bring the cards to the table and show you what the fuck it's all about.
I'm a huge fan of dropping shitty shows but like dgg said, you should at least watch three episodes to get a real taste of it.
Have fun trying to watch Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon's first season which is just massive info dump episode after episode.

And in robotics;notes' case, the first 7 or so episodes are the introduction.
dgg is right. I would of never watched the rest of Toradora if I didn't go back and watch the 2nd episode.

The first 10 you mean?
In Steins;Gate it's 7 or 8.

You make a good point, Fine, fucking whatever, I'll watch it. I was telling my death note obsessed mate about why I dropped it and he said the same thing as you, he's also offered to lend his dvd's of it. I'll watch it tomorrow when I get back from school.
dgg is right. I would of never watched the rest of Toradora if I didn't go back and watch the 2nd episode.
He already is working on getting the [sp]2nd flag[/sp] in episode 8, so i'd say that most of the introduction is out of the way by then.
dropped Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Story was ok, but nothing really captivated me.
I didn't like the artstyle chosen for the anime.
The eyes seem way too big.

Nothing has really happened.
Something finally happened in the 11th episode.

Eyes too big... Watching anime... Does not realize anime has retardedly big eyes in 80% of all productions.
Also how far did you get in? It starts off very slow and uninteresting before shit hits the fan.
dropping higurashi?
what has the world come to
dropping higurashi?

Not like Higurashi is some unforgettable masterpiece or anything.

I guess I like the more realistic looking anime like Monster and Paranioa Agent.
But I don't mind big eyes if the Story keeps me intrigued, but by episode 5 it did not interest me.

So... You finished the most boring arc and didn't get to the next story.
You should watch some more, you haven't seen the show at all and what it's about.
