I'd have to say Obi Wan is a brilliant character, he does have the most depth in any character through the whole series alongside Darth Vader, but in the new series he is a much more likeable character than Anakin.
Aside from that, we have Han Solo.
Han is possibly the most awesome guy in the movie. He starts out as a hired smuggler/transport, in it for the money. By chance or fate, he ends up on the Death Star, the Empire's motherfuckign planet destroying [I]machine[/I]. He helps infiltrate it and rescue a princess, then escapes on a ship thats practically falling apart.
Sure, he runs off once he gets his money, but then, with no real reason other than honor and valour, he flies in, saves Luke from becoming so much glittery space dust, and goes on to become one of the heroes of the Rebel Alliance.
Next part of the series, he's heading on down with his old friend to lunch. Who does he see at the table?
Darth Fucking Vader. What does he do? He starts shooting, thats what.
He gets frozen in carbonite, helps take down Jabba's barge, and then leads the fight on Endor against god knows how many storm troopers, enlisting the help of midget bears!
All of this he does with a kind of bumbling, endearing sense that he shouldn't be there, but does the job that's handed to him because it needs to be done.
Can you get any more awesome?
