Again, if you get such a high caliber weapon, it won't really make much of a difference against a soft, unarmoured target. It would cripple the target a lot more if it was fired at their limbs, but as Lankist has stressed a lot, when you shoot at someone, you shoot to kill.
No shit there. Anyways, if this is self defense just for the house, you do have the right to kill if necessary. But I would go with your suggestion and just cripple your target.

I don't know the complete story, but I do know that's the law.
you probably don't need one if you do need a proper home defense weapon, i'd get a glock 19 with a proper tactical light so you can clear rooms, or a smaller pump or semi automatic shotgun really about anything will do, but if you get anything get something with a proper tactical light mount, or get a light mount on it, and a proper flashlight
Woah, you didn't get what I said. When you shoot, you should shoot to kill, not to cripple. I don't know the complete story, but I do know that's the law.
Sorry, please understand that it's 11 something pm here. So It's the law that you can kill and intruder, and that if you shoot him you MUST kill him? Woah, never knew that.
A sig p226 or p228 will work fine, don't worry about anything with "too much recoil" because if there's someone in your house it's not going to matter at all, you won't feel a thing of recoil with the adrenaline rush
Keep in mind a .22 is what the mob used for headshots as it wouldn't leave an exit wound and would keep the mess to a minimum. Supposedly. But then again they also "SUPPOSEDLY" cemented people's feet and had them sleep with the fishes.
Why does he need to know that? It's not like he's trying to do it covertly. If he kills a robber and calls 911 about it he's going to have cops and forensics units up his ass. He won't have to clean any brains off the wall himself.
Sorry, please understand that it's 11 something pm here. So It's the law that you can kill and intruder, and that if you shoot him you MUST kill him? Woah, never knew that.
If you shoot an unarmed intruder, then you are accountable, seeing as the intruder had no possible risk, meaning you go to jail for assault. If you shoot an armed intruder, then you better shoot him dead, because shooting to stun is extremely suspicious. It's complicated, but if you shoot to kill, and he survives, then he's lucky, and that's what you say in court. However, if you say you shot to stun, that's a crime in many states.

Goddamnit, I lost outside the thread?!
USE A GUN AGAINST A ROBBER wtf?! Isn't that illegal?! Use a Machete...
Get yourself a strong fucking laser and blind the fuckers for life.
Ideally the situation won't result in gun-fire. A shotgun is much more intimidating than a handgun.
Ah yes indeed. Something else I just thought of that I'm kicking myself now for not thinking of earlier. Coach guns. Power of a shotgun. Reliability of a revolver. But only two shots. I just woke up so I'm feeling pretty shakey at the moment and not quite with it.
Ideally the situation won't result in gun-fire. A shotgun is much more intimidating than a handgun.
A pistol is much more maneuverable inside a small hallway.
If you cant get your hands on one, a Colt M1911. However, any gun with a semi-auto 9mm round should be enough to protect your house. or Mossberg 500 with a 7 1/2 buckshot should be enough. A Double-Buck shot would be too much. And I deer slug is most likely going to cost too much damage. or you could do what and every gun noob says and get a hard to find M4A1. M4A1 OMG Iz DE BAST GUNE EVAR LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Myself, I use a Glock 17 for home defense but I also have an SAR-1 and M1 carbine in my room.
Shotgun, can't go wrong. I've got a mossberg 500 with folding stock/pistol grip and 18" barrel. It's not very difficult to maneuver and it packs one hell of a punch. If you like the shotgun idea but still think 18" is to big you could always get a surbu super shorty, you just have to register with the ATF and pay a $5 tax on it (possibly $200 tax if you live out of the state they make it in) :P
If your looking for a home defense gun an old lady can use, I'd recommend to avoid the handguns, they kick allot more than you would think especially if your untrained in the use of them, plus if you don't know what your doing you wouldn't be able to hit shit with it anyway, I'd recommend going out and getting a 12 ga. shotgun and loading it up with 7 1/2 shot, it doesn't kick that much, doesn't penetrate much, and you don't have to worry about being too accurate with it.
You are a dumb ass.. Pistols have way less recoil than a 12 gauge. When I shot my friends 12 gauge my shoulder hurt for almost 2 days. This is coming from a person in the US Marines, I own an AK47, AMD65, AR10, 2 Colt 1911s, an M14, and several shitty .22lrs, Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r, and shotguns. Here is a picture of my little brother shooting my AMD65 Just in case you didn't believe me. PS he is 15. [editline]09:07PM[/editline]
A colt M1911 is a bad choice of a home defense weapon due to its low magazine capacity. If your looking for something for an Old Lady, a .22 Pistol might be of handy, or something 9mm. Don't go anywhere near the USP .40 range though, its way to strong for an old person. Be aware to own a Handgun (Where I live atleast, Virginia US) you have to take several classes and have the gun registered. You can only buy 1 handgun a month, and must be 21 in order to get your CCL. I had to add a Muzzle Break to make mine considered a Long Rifle, otherwise I would have needed A CCL. It stills fits in my backpack though slightly :) Anything below like 16.75 Inches is considered a Concealed weapon. If you really want to get her something effective, accurate, and concealable, but also considered a rifle I'd shoot for a 9mm Keltec Sub2000, I thought about buying one. Thing is, it isn't a completely real M4A1, they have Sentry Arms receivers, etc, which suck terribly. [editline]09:15PM[/editline]
Quick, get Bean-O.
Bean-O honestly doesn't APPEAR to know much about the guns himself, he even posted that most of it is from Wikipedia. [editline]09:16PM[/editline]
p-90 personal defense HELL YEA! [editline]10:17PM[/editline] Its a nice weapon
If I drive about 30 minutes from here they have a P90 and an F2000 for sale.
Try a walther PPK Or James Bond's small ass pistol
You don't have a fucking clue to put it bluntly. Take from someone whose asked practically all the questions under the sun. You want something just in case. Something that when the shit hits you can whip it out and be ready to fight the fucking hordes. Shotguns are good but you cannot leave them constantly loaded 24/7. Why? The spring in the tube WILL form a memory after so long. Now, if you check it weekly you should be fine. But for something that you can load up and just leave it in a drawer for years and not have to worry about the bullets sticking together or the spring in the magazine or tube whatever forming a memory, revolvers are the way to go on that. .38 Special and .357 Magnum rounds are my two personal choices. With .357 Magnum round you'll want a long barrel (4 or 5 inches). A short barrel with that round and the gun is going to kick like a steroid pumped pissed off mule and make one hell of a bang. .38 Special doesn't pack the punch of a .357 but it's good deal more controllable. Now I'm not pooping down shotties, they're amazing if you hear the would be robbers and have the time to load it up and be ready for supreme ass kicking action then by all means go for it. Just be aware that if you miss them entirely the collateral damage is going to be quite something. Especially with Buckshot or Sluggers.
.357 is WAY to powerful for an old lady, I shot a friends .357 revolver and it had the biggest kick out of every handgun I own and have shot. [editline]09:20PM[/editline]
No shit there. Anyways, if this is self defense just for the house, you do have the right to kill if necessary. But I would go with your suggestion and just cripple your target.
Even if you kill someone and the situation is lawful they keep you in solitary confinement for about 30-60 days and see how you act, and if it turns out your bat shit, hey lets just say your going to jail for a long time.
.357 is WAY to powerful for an old lady, I shot a friends .357 revolver and it had the biggest kick out of every handgun I own and have shot.
How long was it's barrel? If it was a short barrel (under 4 inches), then yeah. That thing is going to kick like crazy as I said. For an old lady a .38 special revolver would probably be the way to go.
This will kill them dead.
I would go with a beretta 9mm, perfect for her situation, although if you want a little more punch from a semi auto go for a Colt .45, and if you want a revolver i would suggest a .357 snubnose. The Deagle is obviously the best since it's the most expensive handgun avalible
i think i will get the gold plated deagle because all my tattooed friends in their monster trucks will think i am the coolest guy arounds:downsgun:
I would not like to live in a country where I would have to use a home defense kit...
I'd say get a .44 Magnum Revolver. Don't even have to aim at them and they shit their pants.
Why would you need a "gun expert" to help you decide what gun is best for "home defence". You just pop down to the shops and buy a gun, perhaps a handgun? A relatively low calibre firearm? You don't want to kill the bastard, you just injure him severely, surely.
no i want to kill the fucker
